South Dakota recs for a visitor?

intuitive eggplant Apr 28, 2011 07:36 PM

I’ll be visiting SD and its fine national parks 5/29-5/3, with lodging planned for near Wall, in Custer State Park, probably a night in Rapid City, then Mitchell on my return to OH. The restaurants that have so far hit my radar are The Corn Exchange in Rapid City and its sister business, The Potted Rabbit, plus Chef Louie's Steak House in Mitchell. I’ll be able to cook for myself, and picnic, part of the time. Looking for recommendations of restaurants, markets, even grocery stores in any of the above towns and general vicinity, including Hill City, which apparently has a shop??? that sells Hunters Reserve game sausages I was previously gifted with. Any and all thoughts and suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

I had dinner last night at the Corn Exchange - very good. Not great: I wish the cheese had not been cold but room temp, and there seems a lot of Sturm und Drang from the wait staff for a relatively small room. But that said the wine list is excellent, and the soup and smoked trout appetizer I had were great. Enjoy.

In Hill City is the alpine inn which for dinner does filet mignon for a very reasonable price. It's definitely a great spot for dinner. Though I recommend getting there early as there is always a line. In Chayenne Crossing which has great indian tacos. There isn't much to rave about in Wall however. All the restaurants there are in my opinion mediocre (as of 2009 when I was there last). I do like the donuts at wall drug and there is a nice coffee shop across the street.

I have to second the Alpine Inn in Hill City. We got there late one night after driving 600 miles through Wyoming. They were friendly and attentive. The steak dinner was dirt cheap - all the fixings and extras were first rate. The steak was pretty good quality too.

Prairie Berry Winery, near Hill City, was fun for us. They have wine tastings throughout the day and a deli that serves some tasty treats and sandwiches. Get some wine and lunch to go - instant picnic in a very pretty area.

The Mount Rushmore visitors center serves a very reasonable cafeteria style breakfast. It's not gourmet by any standards, but good basic fuel for exploring the trails at the national monument.
