Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Texas (exc. Austin, Dallas-Ft. Worth and Houston)

San Antonio near Airport

NYC hound driving through San Antonio on the way to the airport in search of the most convenient excellent eats in the vicinity. I'll have about an hour or so before I need to be at the airport, so I suppose I'm limited in how far away I can travel. My heart was set on Tex-Mex, but I'll settle for whatever you South Texas hounds can recommend!

  1. Two suggestions, both within 1/4 mile of each other, very close to the airport (about 5 minutes).

For Mexican (not Tex-mex), Guajillo's, very inexpensive, very authentic. www.guajillos.com

Being from Philly and having lived in NYC, I still wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dough Pizzeria to a New Yorker. They have this amazing oven they brought over from Italy, are VPN certified and use very fresh ingrediants (the basil is picked from a live plant to order!). www. doughpizzeria.com

They are both located at 410 and Blanco.

If you're traveling to the airport from the downtown area, there are also a few great restaurants at The Pearl Brewery complex, about 15 minutes from the airport with no traffic.

They include Il Sogno (probably the best restaurant in SA) and SandBar, both owned by Andrew Weissman who for years ran Le Reve, a very well know restaurant. La Gloria is also there, an upscale take on Mexican street food.

The neighborhood I'm traveling from appears to be called Oak Park / Northwood. La Gloria sounds quite mouthwatering, but Guajillo's authenticity in this case might be a drawback for me. While I love good Mexican food, what I'm really looking for is the type of Tex-Mex that is foreign to NYC, puffy tacos and the like.

I don't care for Tex-mex myself, can't help you there. Not familiar with the area you're talking about, know any cross streets, nearby highways?

        1. re: saeyedoc

Harry Wurzbach Rd., not far South of the 410.
