Anywhere to get a decent b-day cake on the Danforth?

Sweet Pea Apr 27, 2011 05:35 PM

We're having a party for my 2-year-old twins this Sunday, and while I'd love to bake something, I have two 2-year-olds. So, can anyone recommend a good place to pick up a ready-made cake on the Danforth? I want to avoid one of those cloyingly sweet supermarket cakes if possible.

The Chocolatina and the Strawberries & Cream layer cakes from Serano on Pape are decent, and better than most grocery store cakes.

Similar cakes are also available at Donlands Bakery on Pape and Select Bakery on Donlands. http://selectbakery.ca/b_cakes.php

It's also possible to custom order a cake at Celena's. Haven't tried Celena's yet. http://www.celenasbakery.com/

    Select Bakery
405 Donlands Ave, Toronto, ON M4J, CA

    Celena's Bakery
2036 Danforth Ave, Toronto, ON M4C, CA

    Serano Bakery
830 Pape Ave, Toronto, ON M4K 3T4, CA

It's a bit south of Danforth, on Queen E. and Greenwood, but I adore Altitude Baking's cakes.

A bit north on Donlands and O'Connor is Select Bakery. Great place.

I was going to mention Sun Valley as that is where I buy cakes. They also carry cakes from Pauline's Pastries, you can see those here: http://www.paulinespastries.com

I wasn't terribly impressed with the strawberry cake I got from Select. $40 for a half slab plus 10 bucks for themed, kiddie decoration. I didn't have a problem with the price but by getting the decoration I figure I saved them quite a few strawberries, which would have been nice to find inside the cake. Instead, there was the tiniest piece of strawberries in every other slice or so. And an absolutely tasteless pink goo (I would have been happy with jam).

Curious where you ended up going with as a good cake place is always good to have on the roster.
