Columbus Chowhounds: Need Dinner Recs for Downtown Columbus Area...

I'm going to be in the downtown Columbus area next week, looking for tasty dinner spots Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evening. Pricing is of minor consideration, I imagine two of the nights I will be dining alone, and I really enjoy a nice bar scene with really good food....a lot of times nice steakhouses and Italian restaurants might offer such an opportunity. If there's a bar scene that is a must regardless of food quality, let me know about that too please. I'm open to pretty much any type of cuisine but prefer mainstream, and the more options the better. Thanks in advance for your recommendations...

  1. I can't comment much on the young bar scene in downtown Columbus, but if you are looking for old-school steakhouse with great piano bar and terrifc food and have access to a car, I can recommend the Top Steakhouse on the east side of town. It's about a 10 min drive from the center of downtown. A great bar scene and good restaurant in the German Village area just south of downtown would be The Clarmont, which has been in business 50+ years. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You might see some Ohio lawmakers or business luminaries.

Hi, you are the first chowhound to answer from Columbus so I hope you don't mind a new question. I am looking for a greek restaurant to go to before a Crew game. Would you put Anna's greek in Dublin over Yannis on Cleveland ave? Maybe some other choice? Socceralan

This is off-topic, but I have never been to Anna's, not in my neighborhood. Yanni's is great, we know them very well, but this is a sandwich/soup place, nothing fancy. I have been itching to try Fisherman's Wharf, run by Nikki, who is related to the folks who run Yanni's. If you go to FW, please be sure to post a review. It is much more a Saturday date night place. Nikki has had several incarnations of a seafood place in Columbus.

    2. I totally agree with Diane's suggestions. My husband and i are big bar-diners, and we also like Barcelona in German Village (www.barcelonacolumbus.com). Clarmont and The Top are great bar dining scenes and are my favorite in town, but Barcelona has a beautiful bar and the food is great and it is really friendly.

Thanks Diane and Lauren....there was a time when "the young bar scene" may have appealed to me, and from time to time I'll walk in on something that I still enjoy, but for this purpose I'm looking more for the nice piano bar with terrific food concept, and I appreciate both of your suggestions and will take them under advisement.

Lauren, good suggestion of Barcelona. Have only been there for the food (terrific) but the bar is attractive. They have a very nice outdoor patio on a beautiful night which would be lovely as well.

        2. We always try to stop at Rigsby's for lunch when travelling through Columbus - you can eat at the bar if you choose to. The food is terrific, and it's a friendly, relaxed spot.

Another possible spot is G Michaels...I think I've seen people dining at the bar-the food's a little heartier, but it's another nice place.

I find the food at Barcelona a little hit and miss, but they have a great wine by the glass selection and if the weather is good, the garden is a gem-I think I'd be comfortable sitting there by myself.
