Austin to Bandera Trip

A few weeks from now, I will be taking a trip from Austin to Bandera. The intended route will take us through the Hill Country, driving through Blanco for sure and possibly Boerne as well (though I may push it further west through Comfort instead).

We'd like to hit up a winery or two and a nice place for lunch. Sandwiches, bistro fare, German, or Southern home cooking is fair game. We're very likely having BBQ or steak for dinner in Bandera, so that one's out.

I welcome all suggestions. Are there any particularly good wineries out there for tastings (quality-wise, price-wise)?

In Comfort, a great place for lunch is 814 A Texas Bistro. Check out their website, plus there is an incredible chocolate store across the street. The best place in Bandera isn't in Bandera--it's in Tarpley which is a 15 minute drive. See www.macandernies.com for their weekly menu. It's much better than anything in Bandera!! There is also Pike's Place Restaurant just south of Bandera between it and Pipe Creek.

Blanco Bowl still makes the best chicken fried steak I've ever eaten in a restaurant

I do enjoy a good chicken fried steak. Do they do chicken fried chicken (or just plain fried chicken) as well?

Alamo Springs Cafe for the best burger ever. It's between Fredericksburg and Comfort. So delicious!
