Sal e Pepe, Newtown, CT

Has anyone been to Sal e Pepe in Newtown, CT? I had never heard if it before until yesterday when someone recommended it. It has a very Italian menu and then WHAM, it also has Beef Stroganoff...

Sal e Pepe just didn't do it for me. The food (short ribs, gnocchi with bolognese, chicken parm, pork chops) was just average to mediocre Italian American. The bolognese sauce tasted like jarred with some meat tossed in. My short rib was braised properly tender but the sauce didn't taste like braising liquid, it tasted like a packet of water with a package of sauce mix tossed in. Bread however was crusty, tasty according to my dinner guests.

Not horrific, but I have higher standards for Italian these days.

unfortunately, your (and mine) higher stadards for Italian food cannot be met in Monroe-Newtown culinary wasteland. The best of the area is still not all that good.

Sadly, you may be right Bagelman.

Thanks, sounds pretty good. The location doesn't faze me in the least. The friend who recommended it says she loves the Beef Stroganoff.

I've also had very good Boef Bourgignon there.......

Northern Italian born owner, Guatamalan born chef, interesting nuance on classical continetal favorites. My wife loves it there.

Have always had a good meal there, better than the other Italian choices in Monroe-Newtown: Mona Lisa, the late 707 on Main, Riberto's, Carl Anthony's.
Can be a little pricy for the setting, a small strip center on RT 25, but good solid food.

Don't be put off by seeing Beef Stroganoff on the menu, from time to time a few 'Continental' dishes appear on the menu, but are generally well executed.

Sal e Pepe has a bit of a sophisticated feel to it, you ususally won't run into the soccer moms with kids in tow, instead having a date night with hubby.

All in all, I'd give it a 3.6 out of 5. Loses points for location. I can't comment on their wine or drinks, as I seldom drink alcohol.
