best market / vendor to buy stone crabs from? price/quality

Looking for claws that are unfrozen of course. I saw Whole Foods had some for around 18/lb. Has anyone found any good deals anywhere? I've heard stories about people selling on the side of the street.

  1. Where are you at, this board covers about 150 miles!

Beware roadside vendors, they may be selling what I've heard are called "lights". These are claws of normal size but when you open them, there's barely any meat in them.

You can tell by knocking two against each other (or some solid object). If there's a hollow sound, avoid. It should feel full and solid.

I'm in Plantation but can drive 20 - 30 minutes.

Lorenzo's Italian market 164 and dixie or Delaware Chicken Farms 441 across from the old Seminole in Hollywood.

        1121 S Federal Hwy, Dania, FL 33004

      2. Probably the best true bargains you're going to get would be right at a dock. I used to go to a hidden place on the Miami River where they unloaded the boats etc. But that was 15 years ago. There are similar places in the Keys, and no doubt over in Chokoloskee etc.

        1. We always buy our from Triar in Hollywood and they are fresh and delicious. Their prices are much lower than Whole Foods.

I almost always get them at Delaware - their Colossals run at $35 a pound - with 2 to the pound that's a meal in itself!!
