loreeLB Apr 26, 2011 01:28 PM

Going up this way in July and looking for somewhere to have Friday night dinner. Don't want to travel further than say 25 miles? Having dinner the following night in Lake Oswego. I know there are a few posts on Salem but wanted to broaden my search!

Happy eating....

There are a number of restaurants in the area here. I usually go to http://www.eatsalem.com for Salem and surrounding area reviews.

Are you looking for a specific cuisine? price range?

        OK, that helps!

Salem's got La Capitale for French, Caruso's up in Keizer for Italian. In Salem again for American, there's Bentley's Grill, Orupa and Jonathan's.

They all have websites, and if I haven't been to them recently...my parents have and have reported good reviews on them.

I haven't dined out to the East of Salem in a long time, and at the moment can't think of anything other than a French place in McMinnville that stands out, but maybe someone else can chime in on that area.

Bentley's Grill, Salem - Phoenix Grand Hotel
291 Liberty Street SE, Salem, OR 97301

        Caruso's Italian Cafe & Catering

Still looking? Try the Crooked House Bistro in West Salem http://www.crookedhousebistro.com/. Here's a photo of one of the dishes we had last Thursday night, seared scallops with black truffle risotto, fois gras, and a fig reduction. La Capitale is really very good but Crooked House is just the best!! Seriously, this place is flying under the radar but Bernard is really hitting 'em out of the park!!

I remember when Chowhound was really about "chow" -- low cost, high quality grub with a distinctive local flair. All these suggestions are high end "fine dining." I'm surprised no one has suggested Orupa.

OK, end of rant. Having gotten that out of my system, and because you say you are up for $$-$$$, I'd recommend La Capitale (excellent reasonably priced French bistro food) or Andaluz right next door (excellent, authentic Spanish tapas).

BTW, the best real "chow" in Salem is at our many authentic Mexican eateries.

We'd love to have you dine in our fair city.
