Looking for Good Places that do takeout on the Cambridge/Somerville line

mocooks Apr 26, 2011 05:24 AM

My parents are in town over the next and we will be doing lots of takeout with them for dinners (in the past we have always gone out and they have enjoyed dinners at Oleana, East Coast Grill, and Ole to name a few but we have a new baby so will be staying in). Our usual takeout options are Zoe's, Kebab Factory and Taqueria La Mexicana. I am sort of at a loss in trying to think of some other good takeout options in the general vicinty (Harvard Square, Porter Square, Inman Square, Union Square). What am I missing/overlooking? Any cuisine and price point is really fine - just looking for some additional variety to throw into the mix. Thanks!

ETA: Two of us are non-meat eaters so some place that has good meat free options would be good.

The crew from that area were just making recommendations for someone looking for comfort food last week.

I'd add Rod Dee in Porter Sq to the list for some thai food. If you do sushi, throwing together a sushi dinner with fish from New Deal and Reliable Market is a nice treat (we make our own sushi rice, which is easy, and then just serve a plate of fish, a big bowl of rice, and sheets of nori/seaweed for each person to make their own hand rolls).

I'm no connoisseur, but I'll never turn down an eggplant parm sub from Newtowne Grill either.

While their pizza has haters and fans on this board, City Slicker Cafe is in that area and they deliver. I've had good luck with some of their pastas and sandwiches. Their steak tips are pretty good as well.

Second. I think they are pretty solid (especially considering how pathetic the takeout sandwich options are nearby). They are also very friendly, and delivery is pretty quick. Their California BLT - a BLT with avocado and chipotle mayo is pretty good.

Speaking of sandwiches, how has no one mentioned All Star Sandwich Bar?

Repeating from the other thread, but I'd strongly recommend the Peruvian grilled chicken from Machu Picchu in Union Square. (Note there are two outposts of MP -- one larger restaurant and one chicken grill; I prefer the chicken grill). It's great to take away, with sides of rice and beans, some yummy salads, and the anticuchos (grilled beef hearts) are good too.

Picture of anticuchos -- for the faint of heart (heh) don't be afraid. They taste like beefy beef and are grilled with a yummy Peruvian spice rub.

            Lots of places:
Pho 'n' Rice (across from Zoe's on Beacon St.) has quite decent pho.

Also a big fan of Machu Picchu Pollos a la Brasa (charbroiled chicken); whole chicken with sides for something like $16---I like the fried sweet potatoes side.

Capone's in Union Square has fresh pasta and frozen sauces; fresh pasta cooks in a few minutes! Also have frozen ravioli, lasagna trays, empanadas, etc. Lots of great stuff that requires minimal prep at home.

Olecito (Inman) has good tacos, burritos, and tortas (sandwiches)

Punjabi Dhaba (Indian in Inman): I love it but not everyone does; call ahead for shorter wait times

Kolbeh of Kabob (name?) on Cambridge St. (across from Camb hosp) has solid Persian and pan-Middle-Eastern food: nice grilled meats, rice dishes, hummus, falafel, etc.

Is takeout pho worth doing? I guess if they pack it with the noodles separate it could work.

I also like Sweet Ginger a lot. I will again recommend City Girl Cafe in Inman, which I also mentioned in the thread that Penny linked to above. I think it's great and very underrated. They have plenty of veggie options as well. Tupelo would also do takeout, I would think. I'm a fan of their gumbo, which is not expensive. I like American Chinese from Wok n' Roll, which is on Foodler. They deliver to Inman, so I assume they'd deliver elsewhere in Cambridge/Somerville. Congrats on the new baby.

O Senhor Ramos/Snack Bar in E. Cambridge, stick with the Portuguese items. If you call to order (as opposed to stopping in), be sure to ask about the specials; if they have rabbit, I'd get it.

Indian: Tamardin Bay - in Harvard Square

The new Super Fusion branch on Mass Ave between Porter and Harvard (near Forest St., close to Porter) is decent.

Tacos Lupita on Elm St. in Somerville (near the train tracks and the car wash on Somerville Ave) is well liked on the board.

I'm also partial to La Ronga Bakery's pizza, across the street on Somerville Ave from City Slicker Cafe, but it's only from the deli which closes around 6 p.m. daily I think.

                      And I second Rod Dee.

BTW, on Zoe's and Kebab Factory ... I'll take your leftovers. :)

                        Along with others before me:
-- The chicken at Machu Pichu is just tremendous.(their fries are terrible though) we also regularly get their unusual, huge tamales, and their spice-rubbed pork and sweet potato sandwiches- (which reheat really well).
-- Mulan -love their tea smoked chicken(my fav in boston),and smoked pork and leek
-- At Capone's i like the duck lasagna (frozen)

----the Independent in Union Sq. has a very good menu and does take-out.
-- Wang's dumplings ($13 for 50 frzen in a bag; i like the shrimp and pork variety; there are others too) for a quick lunch or snack, tossed with some soy/rice wine vinegar.
-- Soundbites : seafood soup, middle eastern foods ; (kid-friendly/ relaxed and very tasty brunch options for dining in)
-- Pescatore's has been getting a lot of positives lately

So for the non-meat eaters, you can get take-out from Pulse Cafe, which I recommend with reservations, in that it is not blow-you-away good, but a ok vegan option.

Also for Thai, consider Tamarind House on Mass. Ave., in addition to Rod Dee.

On the Machu Picchu, completely agree that the fries are bad - BUT if you have the patience to bake them on a cookie sheet at 400 until they are crispy, they will be much improved. Meanwhile you can pick at the chicken while you wait.

Haven't had Dave's Cubano but have had their steak and blue cheese sandwich and I'm dreaming about how to get another one soon.

I'll throw Basta Pasta in for hearty tasty homemade pasta. I like their bolognese alot, and I usually end up getting their specials. They also have pizza and sandwiches but honestly I like the pasta too much to explore the menu more. Good luck!

apparently Oleana does take out! Never would have thought of it!

I like Amelia's Kitchen in Teele Square as well. Great pastas, really great pizza, and wonderful panini for lunch, especially their Hookah -- grilled portabellos, pesto, cheese -- terrific and tasty!
