Walking distance of Shubin Theater...
A friend and I are attending a workshop at the ShubinTheatre, 407 Bainbridge, in early June. We will be on foot and pretty busy, but I am eager to fit in a few good meals within a mile or two of the theater. All cuisines welcome -- but having gone to college outside Philadelphia, I have eaten more than my share of cheesesteaks. This is my first Chowhound post; much thanks for your help.
shubin is essentially my backyard, you have tons of options as mentioned. I definitely agree with everything buckethead posted. but if you want a little more casual, walk 5 mins down passunk to royal tavern for some good beer and excellent casual bar food. They have my favorite burger in town and is a great low key spot for brunch lunch or dinner.
That is a good location for eats and drinks.
For cocktails be sure to hit Southwark across the street. Food is good, too. There's a bunch of good restaurants within just a few blocks you will need to provide some criteria to narrow it down but off the top of my head some places to check out:
Hoof + Fin
Bistrot la Minette
Hosteria Da Elio
That's just within a few blocks, expanding to 1-2 miles gives you a huge slice of Center City and South Philly dining to choose from, everything from ultra-casual to fine dining.
That's one of the best food neighborhoods in the city, you have lots of great choices. I'm not a big fan of Hoof & Fin, Beau Monde, Cochon (sorry) or Bistrot La Minette, but would heartily recommend Southwark, Horizons and Brauhaus Schmitz. If you don't mind walking a bit, 3 of the city's best restaurants are within a mile of there: Zahav (best in the city in my opinion), Kanella, and Bibou. Bibou is kind of a tough reservation but if you call now they may be able to fit you in.
