Looking For Spectacular In LA For Under $30-$50 A Person
It's easy to get amazing food if you are willing to spend a fortune. However, I really don't like the pretentious places or folks to which "foodies" tend to gravitate. For example, Cut or L'Orange just don't do it for me. What I am looking for is someplace where the "wow" factor is in the quality of the food for the price.
Places that come to mind immediately are the original Versailles, Langer's, Pink's or Jinky's, all of whom have really great food for a really great price.
With that said, my brother is in town for a couple of days and I'd like to take him someplace for dinner where we're not spending more (or much more) than about $30-$50 a person.
Oh, yeah. He's from Hawaii, so I'd prefer something other than Asian food.
Anywhere in the LA area is fine. Any ideas?
Lazy Ox, Waterloo & City, Father's Office, Umami Burger are some of my favorites.

I really like the Father's Office Burger (and their pimientos de padron are great, too), and was going to suggest that. I have not tried Umami Burger and have not heard of the others. What's good there?

I love Langer's, best Pastrami on earth, but know they close daily at 4pm and are closed Sundays.

Along the same lines, I don't remember ever having the same caliber or type of Chinese food in Hawaii as we have in LA (albeit I've only been in Hawaii briefly). And when it comes to value-oriented food, nothing beats the SGV.

The Monday night bistro menu at Jiraffe might fit the bill. The food is always spot on and the price can't be beat.

Also try Son Of A Gun Restaurant., Drago Centro's bar menu, Simple Things Restaurant, or Golden State. You can actualy eat for less than $50/person at Pizzeria Mozza and Street if you watch your number of dishes..

Oinkster in Eagle Rock is awesome, they have great burgers, pulled pork, roast chicken and they serve plantains!

When Oinkster is good, they're very good, but they're very inconsistent. That said, it's been nearly a year since I was last there, so I should probably give them a try again.

I don't think I would call Oinkster spectacular, but it is tasty.

Eva has a Sunday night supper for $39 including wine. The food is very good as is the wine which they pour freely. Sign up for their email and they will send you the menu for the upcoming Sunday.
