Restaurants where I can take our kids

We are in NY for 3 nights and our young children are used to good behavior in nice restaurants. Are there any fine dining restaurants that you could recommend where if we took our kids for an early 5pm dinner, we wouldn't be frowned upon? Anything you think they would also like too? Will be doing the usual kid friendly places for lunches like delis, Shake Shack, sushi, etc, but would love to hit some fine dining too. Thanks so much!

I've found the various Blue Ribbons to be a good fit for kids. It's not hushed-temple-of-cuisine fine dining, but the food's good, and interesting, and the servers seem to genuinely enjoy seeing young guests.

When are you coming to NYC? How old are your kids (infant? toddler? older?) and how many do you have?

What do you mean when you say fine dining, do you mean like Per Se, Daniel, Jean Georges level (4 stars from the New York Times)? Many of them don't begin serving dinner until 5:30pm and even then, that's a long time to ask a very young child to behave/be quiet/etc.

Do you dine out with them often for 2-3 hour long dinners?

      Is lunch time a possibility?

Thanks Kathryn for the great questions. The kids will do well for up to 1.5 hours at a restaurant. I guess I don't mean "fine" at the 4 star level. My kids are 4.5 and 6.5. Thanks for any tips you have.

In restaurants that are not delis or fast food, the average dining time for two people is about an hour-and-a half. The more people, the longer it takes. So, with a party of five, finishing a meal in under an hour and a half at a restaurant with any level of "fine dining" will be difficult. That said...

Keens, our favorite NYC steakhouse, has been in its 36th St. location since 1885. Thus, in addition to delicious steaks, chops, sides, etc., there is unmatchable Old NY ambiance -- walls filled with American memorabilia and rows of clay smoking pipes suspended from all the ceilings. I've seen families with young children there. While the food tends to come out relatively quickly, to cut down a bit on the time spent at the table, you could look over the menu on their website before going and decide in advance what you will order. They start serving dinner at 5 p.m.

Landmarc, in the Time-Warner Center, is a white-tablecloth restaurant, very family-friendly and with good food. They serve continuously from 12 noon until 2 a.m.
