Trip report - Porto, Lisbon, Albufeira in April.

  • 0

I had the most wonderful visit to Portugal last week and it would have been a totally different experience without the help of this message board. Special thanks to vinhotinto75 who puts so much work into highlighting the best places to dine! I did not have a bad meal my entire trip. I ordered the house wine everywhere and was always impressed.

Porto:
Cafe Majestic - I wasn't impressed with the tea here even though it was highly recommended. The food tasted like it had been sitting out, getting stale for a few days. but Rua Santa Catarina is a fun street to people watch.

Foz Velha - had tasting menu and it was amazing. they have built a horrific building in front of it, so you can no longer see the ocean, but the location is still quite quaint. see pic first dessert course below.

Pedro Lemas - amazing and Chef came out to introduce himself and was very gracious and appreciative. hard to locate, in a small alley tucked away.
>>Kid
>>Bacalhau
>>Pork Cheek

Lisbon:
- Restaurante Antonio (lunch) simple and perfect - see pic below
>> Chicken and chips with salad

- Bonjardim (dinner) - Rua Sao Jose - such a fun little pedestrian area
>> Roast Chicken and creamed spinach

- Assinatura (dinner) - great service.
>>Amuse Bouche - Skate with sweet potato mash and coriander
>> Modern take on Calho Verde
>> Lamb in a cinnamon crust, carrots and “tuberas” rice

- Restaurante Fidalgo (dinner) - traditional portuguese cuisine, fun neighborhood
>> Octopus with rice and beans (a kind of stew)

- Casa Do Alentejo (dinner) - amazing azulejos and moorish building - see pic below
>> I can't remember exactly, but it was fish

- Pastelaria Pombal (coffee) - huge selection of pastels. great espresso.

Albufeira: (it's actually in Gaia)
- Vila Joya
-- best $200 lunch I've ever had. view (see pic below), service and food were impeccable. somewhat remote.
>> Salmon caviar w/ a avocado & wasabi mousse
>> Cream soup of celery with truffle foam and trio of liver
>> John Dory with Cucumber and Pommery-Mustard Sauce
