Has anyone been to Duna Csarda / Csarda's on Melrose lately?

Csarda's on Melrose is a such a strange restaurant - it seems to go through cycles of good and bad. At times, it's been an absolute great spot for a weiner schinitzel and a slice of dobos torte or cremeschniten. At other times, it's been completely empty and felt like no one cares what is going on there. I know there have been ownership and chef changes over the years.

Has anyone gone recently especially people who can compare it to its hey days (probably mid 90's)?

Also if so, has anyone had luck getting fresh dobos torte or creme schnitten there? Again this is something that has varied somewhat over time (especially the dobos torte).

  1. The last time I was at Csardas was about 3 years ago. We went for dinner a little on the early side as we were taking my 90-year-old Mother-in-Law out for a birthday dinner. As I recall, the place was essentially empty except for one table with 3 young men, obviously Hungarian emigres, who were quietly playing cards! The room was very plain with tvs showing movies of various Hungarian cities travelogue style. I don't recall what we ate but do remember that the food was plentiful, flavorful and enjoyable. I am of Hungarian descent although the family was from Eastern Hungary and from a peasant village and the food that I was raised on was a melange of Eastern European dishes, even some from Romania! The food that was offered at Csardas was more big city, mainstream Hungarian, and I really am not a good judge of that type of food except to say that the food was good. The food was served by the proprietors and they were more than accomodating. Parking was in a small lot that fronts the restaurant.

Thanks that sounds similar to my experiences there. Doesn't sound like many on this board go there, so I'll have to wander in soon.
