Vegetarian friendly and baby friendly: Bay Area

  • 8

We are coming to the Bay Area from Montreal next week with our 4 month old, and looking for some good Vegetarian friendly options that would also be baby friendly (and fit a stroller, his giant head is still a little wobbly for high chair sitting ;-). We love California cuisine, Mexican and Indian food, we fell in love with Burmese food last time we were there, and while based in Walnut Creek, we usually end up going to eat in Oakland, SF and Berkeley. I have looked at all the other threads on kid and baby friendly restaurants, but they seem to have more chinese, pub, french, ect. Thanks for your help!

  1. In SF, Gracias Madre goes beyond vegetarian-friendly all the way to vegan - and I think their dining room would accommodate a stroller well.

If you're pescatarian, Peruvian food might be of interest. Limon Rotisserie's menu has a lot of fish options and veggie empanadas. Very family friendly place in general.

In Berkeley, Vik's would be a good place to grab lunch. The daily specials are less vegetarian friendly than the rest of their menu. Navigating the dining room with a stroller during the lunch rush might be a challenge, but doable.

Another Berkeley option that comes to mind is Gather. Very locavore, with plenty of vegetarian options. Not totally clear how well they'd accommodate a stroller. Maybe others can comment?

All of these places look amazing, and all very different from what we can find at home! Thanks for this!

I second Vik's and Gather. Especially Gather for a nice, unique treat.

      2. I would strongly consider Enquentro in downtown Oakland. The place is tiny, but has a great neighborhood vibe, and would probably be OK with a quiet stroller.

This place looks incredibly good. Thanks for the suggestion.

        2. I just visited a new cafe and play space in Hayes Valley that I'll highly recommend. The website calendar indicates it's meant to be a gathering place for the toddler set..

It's called Seesaw, on Octavia near Grove. It's sunny and full of tables at very low heights. I had a delicious cup of tea. They have Four Barrel espresso and treats like aebelskiver (sp) and lots of small sandwiches.

Closes around 5, so daytime only. But a nice break if you find yourself in that area.

I would highly recommend Picante on 6th Street in Berkeley (Mexican). It has a separate vegetarian menu and it's about the kid-friendliest place I have ever seen. Lots of kids - always.
