South Bay Recommendations?

Judge Ito Apr 22, 2011 11:46 AM

We're looking to meet up with some friends tonight in the South Bay area, Manhattan Beach or Redondo Beach area. Any recommendations? Our friends are bring their 7-year old son so the place needs to be relatively kids-friendly.

Three places we are looking at:

Chez Melange
Bombay Tandoori
Hwang's Restaurant

Any suggestions / advices would be appreciated. Thanks!

We don't live in the South Bay, so I don't know anything about the places you've listed. We have taken our kids (9 & 7) to Hudson House, in Redondo Beach before. Besides the fact that it is basically a bar, they have booths, and the food was delicious, we ordered almost everything on their menu. My older kid had the cheeseburger, my little one had the ribs. It can be a bit lively, but they were totally accommodating to us as a family, and never batted an eye about the fact that two kids were there, which leads me to believe, they are kid friendly.

I don't know what day of the week you were there but Hudson House on a Friday night is a ZOO. I won't go there on a Friday night--with or without kids. Food is great & I really like the place but it is extremely loud and crowded.
If you want to be near the water in Redondo--how about Kincaid's?

Um, it was a Saturday night. We got there right at 5 pm, since we were in that general area (about 5 miles away in Torrance) at that time, but I knew they "opened" for dinner only, since I've wanted to try the chef's food for a while. But I gotta say, the booth next to us, from the sound & volume of their conversation, had probably been there since 3 pm at the latest................

But yes, it is loud, and small and there is nothing soft to absorb the sound, and I can imagine on a Friday or Saturday night, the place and people get loud as they drink more.

My kids love Mama D's in Manhattan Beach. A casual neighborhood italian spot but very kid friendly and with very good service. Just around the block from the pier.

Tin Roof Bistro. or if you don't mind chains, Houston's or Il Fornaio.

Go to MB Post restaurant in Manhattan Beach, it is great food and relatively kid friendly, just opened by a Michelin star Chef so it'll be busy for the next month or two. Or try Oliver's Place in Redondo Beach. Interior is interesting to say the least but it is warm tones and lots of Oliver Twist themes. Chez Melange is still a pretty solid place to try as well, nice staff, good food.

I walked up to Oliver's Place (the place that took over the Chicago for Ribs building), and noticed a bunch of typos on their menu. For example, they serve "forged" mushrooms, not "foraged" mushrooms. I'm not sure if this type of sloppiness extends to their cooking.

Maybe they actually have "fake" (hence - forged) mushrooms (like fake crab)... ;-D>

Very funny. ;) Sadly, I don't think they are that "sophist-a-ma-cated" (to quote Homer Simpson).

Spelling errors aside, the fact is the food is pretty good. They have hand made pasta, the Foie Gras and Steak was good, foie cooked just right.

By the way, we ended up going to Chez Melange - the kid's mom wanted to give it a try. The place has a bar/casual dining up front, and more of a formal dining area in the back where we dined. Food was pretty good, I had the Twice Cooked Pork. At the same time, they seem to be known for their shellfish selection (which unfortunately I'm allergic to). Others who do may love this place - I can't comment on this, sadly.

Overall, food was decent, a bit overpriced, probably not best for kids, and the waiter was nice but little too overbearing at times.
