reasonably-priced, quiet, byo steakhouse?

Hello-- I'm looking for a steakhouse in downtown Chicago somewhere that's not extremely expensive ($20-30 dollar range or so for entrees) that's byo and is also not too noisy. Does anyone have any ideas?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Another that fits some of your criteria, but not all: Las Tablas Colombian Steakhouse in Lincoln Park (on Lincoln Ave, just north of Diversey). They are BYOB (wine only) Monday through Thursday, generally quiet on weekdays, and entrees fall in the $15-25 range.

Lincoln Park of course isn't "downtown," and BYOB is not an option on weekends, when they open the full bar.

I enjoyed my one experience there.

Yup, you're just not going to find everything you're looking for in one place.

The price really depends on what you order. The best steakhouses have a wide variation in prices on their menu. For example, at David Burke's Primehouse - IMHO our best steakhouse - has an early-bird special Sundays-Wednesdays with a limited three-course menu for $40; on their regular menu, the non-steak main entrees that go from the low twenties to the low forties, and steaks that go from $39 to $67. It's also not too noisy. Wildfire tends to be a little lower in price but is rather noisy. And good American steakhouses are almost never BYOB.

nxtasy - I looked over the DBP menu(s) and am thinking strongly of having lunch there on the Friday of my weekend. That leaves me with what to think about for dinner......The Rafaello has an upstairs deck suitable for carry-in food/delivery. What might you suggest I can call for to fill that bill? We are open to all foods and I know when I stay in Andersonville at my friend's house she has access to so many many restaurants that deliver. Any sort of ribs in that category?
You are a true resource and a wonderful poster! Aloha - M

David Burke's Primehouse is indeed surprisingly affordable for lunch.

For dinner, most of the restaurants in the area can pack up their entire menu for carry-out, and some deliver. www.grubhub.com is a good website for finding restaurants for delivery, and you can order on the site for many of them.

Carson's is less than a mile away and has good ribs; I know they can do carry-out but I don't know if they offer delivery.

You could also walk or take a cab over to Fox & Obel, our premier gourmet food store; it's maybe a mile from the Rafaello and they have a huge assortment of great prepared foods.

If you're just trying to keep costs down while having great foods, I'd make a reservation at Sable and eat there. Their food prices are surprisingly low, and the food is great.

Thanks, I have been to F&O and you are right, they are the premier. When I lived in Chicago I helped open Gaper's Chefs de Cuisine on Michigan Ave. where Stanley Korshak & Spiaggia is. There was nothing like it then and unfortunately it did not last long probably because it was so cutting edge. I appreciate the link for delivery. I have always loved Carson's and there are not too many left. I always went to the one in Skokie while going to NU in Evanston. I love their potatoes! That might just fill the bill! Not much good ribs out in Naperville from what I could tell in October. I think I mentioned looking up Sable and their menu and I really think I may make it there as well. People seem "dressed" up to me but then I think that a lot whenever I am away from home! I appreciate all your suggestions! Would be funny if you were at Sable when I was and didn't know it!

Burke's does allow byob for $25.00 corkage, I think. I can't remember but I've taken wine in there a number of times. I don't know about any other steakhouses in Chicago, though.

The only place I can think of that meets some of your criteria is Tango Sur, it's an Argentinean steak-house-y byob place in Lakeview (15-20 minutes North, close to Wrigley). Close to your price points also.

In the "Downtown" area I don't think you'll find anything that hits your byob/price criteria.

The only steakhouse that I know of that is BYO and reasonably priced is Tango Sur and it is not downtown and it is not especially quiet. It also does not take reservations.

Mon Ami Gabi is a bistro that specializes all kinds of steak frites. It is not too far from "downtown" (which is a very big area in itself). It is not BYO and entrees are in the $18 - $40 range.

All the quiet downtown steakhouses that I know of are highly priced with entrees in the $20-$50 range and none of them are BYO. There might be some that will have a corkage fee for bringing your own, but that is not likely to be nominal.

There are the Brazilian steak house chains like Fogo de Chao and Texas de Brazil. They charge a set fee for all you can eat, but even after I checked their websites, I don't know what that fee is.

            Good luck.
