Good eats near Powell's City of Books

  • 3

I'm a New Yorker visiting PDX for the first time, spending Sat at Powell's and looking for good brunch/lunch/early dinner near Powell's downtown. I expect to spend the entire day going in and out of Powell's, taking food breaks and checking out the neighborhood. Any and all suggestions welcome. Cocktails, too!

I'm staying in SE near Hawthorne, hitting the food carts on Mississippi, etc., Pok Pok, yada yada

Thanks in advance.

  1. Saturday is hard, because everything is busy for brunch. Kenny and Zuke's is very close, but there will be a line out the door until around midday. Many of the food carts around 10th and Alder are open - go to Nong's, Addy's, the People's Pig or Wet Hot Beef. Little Big Burger not too far, for a great burger and excellent fries. Ping is a bit more of a walk, but it's now open for lunch Saturdays and usually not too busy then.

For an early dinner, Clyde Common and Gruner open at 5pm, both good for cocktails (though Clyde has a better bar). Also excellent cocktails at Teardrop, Irving St Kitchen and Central, all of which are walkable from Powells.

You could also walk/catch the streetcar down to the farmers market at PSU in the morning (it's open until 1 or 2, I think). There are some awesome food vendors there - Tastebud, Bingo sandwiches, Pine State Biscuits, plus lots of pastries, cookies, chocolate, etc.
