Eats in Central Mississippi?

Going to drive from the coast up through Hattiesburg, Jackson, and Port Gibson via Natchez Trace. Anybody know where we should eat? I'll get plenty of seafood on the coast - Interested in knowing about BBQ, HOT TAMALES, and HOME COOKING ... any rec's??

    What's your route. Are you going from Hattiesburg to Port Gibson and then Jackson. Thanks.

      Route changed a bit. No Hattiesburg, rather straight from Gulf Coast up to Jackson and then Natchez Trace to Port Gibson.

      Go to Leatha's in Hattiesburg. The Shed is good too. Go to Tony's for tamales in Jackson. Hickory Pit has good BBQ. Elite has good country food. Two Sisters has good country food too.

        I have to disagree about the Elite. While certain items are indeed tasty (veal cutlet, enchilada, rolls), most of their food comes from a can and I do not feel that it is worth recommending to people who have a limited amount of time in the city.

        Home cooking: Two Sisters Kitchen in downtown Jackson; Collins Dream Kitchen in West Jackson; Mama Hamil's in Madison.

        I'm not really a fan of any Jackson area barbeque.

          Have you been to Lumpkin's, Harry? It is actually a really good lunch buffet that serves brisket and ribs too. My favorite ribs are my own and some of them from gas stations, but the place ain't bad...

            I'm going to give Lumpkin's a big thumbs up too. Their brisket is fabulous.

          Lumpkin's BBQ in Jackson is a do not miss place for lunch- wonderful! There is the Big Apple Inn on Farish Street for hot tamales (also in Jackson)- guaranteed to be some of the best that you have ever had.

          For fried chicken on the Trace there is Old Country Store in Lorman- my favorite fried yard bird, and with any luck you will get free entertainment!

          In Natchez there is a BBQ place- (I can't think of the name, but it is on the south side of the street that goes over the MS river bridge) that does deep fried hot tamales- a lot better than they sound!
