I will be visiting Portland for the 1st time and while there will be taking a friend out for dinner - he is just back from Italy and is desperatley missing the wonderful food he experienced - what is your favorite straight forward Italian restaurant ? Thank you in advance for your insight.

Not necessarily all "straight forward" Italian, but the following are highly recommended and are open on Sunday evenings:
    Nostrana
    3 Doors Down
    Tabla

If you are going for dinner, on a Sunday, I would highly recommend Ciao Vito on NE Alberta. It is where we go to get our Italian fix.

You should take him to Taste Unique on Division, so he can connect with Stefania, who is from Rome. They bare open for lunch, or take out. They only do dinners 2x a month, so you will need to check with her, but i believe that is the most authentic Italian experience you can have in Portland
