Kuala Lumpur - Indian Banana Leaf Rice
This little-known eatery, Sri Ganapathi Mess, is located in PJ Old Town, that's what locals call this rather charming part of Petaling Jaya, to differentiate it from PJ New Town, clustered around the MPPJ high-rise office tower. It offered some of the best-tasting fried chicken in town, to go with the banana leaf rice.
A waiter comes by to take your order, then a placemat-like banana leaf is placed in front of you. Another waiter comes around to dish a mound of steamed Indian rice (larger grains than local varieties) onto your banana leaf. Yet another server comes around to dish out 4 types of spiced vegetable-sidedishes: they vary from day-to-day and can consist of curried cabbage & snakegourd with mustard seeds, hot mango chutney, cucumber in yoghurt, etc. One of the waiters will come back with a small pail of dhal curry gravy, which he'll ladle liberally all over your rice. A couple of crisp pappadums will be dropped beside your, by now, buffet of flavors.
You can order any additional dish separately - their famous fried chicken, or curried fish or chicken, or crisp bittergourd or banana chips.
Diners are encouraged to eat using your hands, Indian-style, though cutlery is also available for the more squeamish.
