Date night dinner

  • 5

My boyfriend and I go out to dinner once a week, usually Thursday or Friday. I'm vegetarian, he's not. We've had good luck with casual restaurants like Utopia and Negroni, but once in a while, we'd like to go somewhere a little fancier, where he can get a decent steak and I can get -- well, something that isn't risotto or really predictable pasta.

Woodlot was great, but they're usually pretty packed and not super reliable when it comes to reservations.

Any suggestions? We'd prefer to stay downtown but will go anywhere that's easily reached by TTC.

Thanks!

  1. Have you tried 93 Harbord? They have a very balanced menu in terms of veg and meat items IMO.

    1. Agree that 93 Harbord is a great place. Haven't been for a while, but it's a place I've been wanting to revisit.

I like Tabule. Love the fried eggplant, fried tomatoes, baba ghanoush, fattoush. Also enjoy the same dishes at Jerusalem on Eg W, but prefer the atmosphere at Tabule. Not fancy, but a little more upscale and stylish than most Middle Eastern restaurants.

Also, it's possible to get vegetarian Thai dishes at Khao San Road. Again, not a fancy place, but maybe slightly more upscale than a place like Utopia. I've only tried the squash fritters and vegetarian tom yum so far, but hope to try some other vegetarian dishes (including the crispy tofu) on my next visit. Just remember to mention you're vegetarian to the server, so the kitchen will use the vegetarian replacements for the fish sauce/shrimp paste/etc. when they prepare your meal. ;-)

edit: just realized, your boyfriend won't be able to order steak at either of the places I mentioned. But he can order a beef kabob at Tabule or Jerusalem, or beef curry at KSR. ;-)

Le Select serves steak frites, and has a nice beet salad on the menu. Haven't tried their other veggie dishes.

Simple Bistro also might be a good place to go, if you're looking for a place that serves a good steak, and good veggie dishes. Simple has a new spring menu as of April 14th. http://www.simplebistro.com/Home_file...

Thanks! Khao San Road is on our list, though not for steak night. :)

I'll have a look at 93 Harbord, Le Select and Simple. None of these places had occurred to me!

      2. My go-to date night restaurants is Pizza Libretto, great veggie and meat options, the beet caprese salad is awesome, I'd pass on the cheese plate if that's what you're into, though.
Another good one is the Harbord Room (although I find it's sometimes a hit or miss with the menu), Terroni, Buca's nice if you're looking to really shell it out. Have you gone to the Drake for dinner at all? I tried to hold off from loving it, but the food really is good.

I forgot the Drake! Haven't been in a while, but like you, I really enjoyed it. Buca is definitely going to be a special occasion place. I'll check out the other menus. Thanks!
