Tucson - Vila Thai

DriverPhil Apr 18, 2011 02:54 PM

I'm hearing from friends that Vila Thai is a place to avoid now. Bad food and service, no AC.

Anyone been recently?

I have never been, because my husband (who teaches at the university and has tried most of the places on University blvd) refuses to go again - I guess what you've heard about the horrible service (both the staff and the manager, in my husband's case) is true. With the heat wave (or is it here to stay?) no AC might be a deal breaker as well.

Do you have a favorite Thai place in town? I've tried Bai Thong, Bangkok Cafe and Karuna's Thai (which I liked, but would certainly categorize as a dive), but would love other recommendations.

No, VT used to be our goto Thai place.

We recently were led to Shogun Sushi and that has taken the place of VT for now.

Bai Thong is owned by the sister of the owner of Char's Thai. I've eaten at Char's as the go to place for the last 25 years. Have tried Bangkok Cafe, and judging by my standard Pad Thai at lunch, I have never been back.

The University location is closed, swapped for one on Congress/Stone that includes an open-air bar. They're on dry run until the first week of May. I stopped by and the set-up, cocktail and service were all fine, but I haven't tried the food.

We didn't have any troubles the last times we were there before it closed, for what it's worth. I haven't tried their new place, though.

New location on Congress is wonderful ... well-prepared food, reasonable pricing, comfortable space, decent service, great wines (half-off on Tuesdays). Give it a try - much different from the Univ Blvd experience.
