Restaurant plans in Charleston and Savannah; How should I change my "eating itinerary?"

  • k

Hey Hounds,

Planning on doing an eating trip to Charleston and Savannah in mid-late May and wanted some feedback on my eating agenda. Are any of these dubious choices? Am I missing something I shouldn't. Have been to Charleston before, and eaten at some of the ultra-upscale places (Peninsula, McCrady's), so was trying to go a different route on this trip. Never been to Savannah before. Look forward to the feedback!

Day 1 - Charleston
Lunch - Hominy Grill
Dinner - FIG

Day 2 - Charleston
Lunch - Amen Street
Dinner - Husk

Day 3 - Charleston/Savannah
Lunch - Bertha's Kitchen (for some of the best soul food on the drive out of the city)
Dinner - Alligator Soul

Day 4 - Savannah
Lunch - Vic's On The River
Dinner - ??? (Was thinking maybe Local 11 Ten, but not sure. Don't really want to do Pink House or Elizabeth's)

Day 5 - Savannah
Brunch - B. Matthews

  1. I think that looks like big fun. I might sub Mrs. Wilkes' for one the Savannah lunches. It's so good.

Thanks, Sue. I would love to do Mrs. Wilkes, but I'm unfortunately in Savannah over the weekend, and I believe Mrs. Wilkes is only open during the week. Next time!

Oops, sorry I forgot about that! Those tapas sound good.

    2. I had dinner at Jazz'd Tapas on Saturday night and every plate we tried was outstanding! We especially loved the she crab stew, the chorizo stuffed mushrooms, and the martini tenderloin tips.

      1. Thanks. Jazz'd sounds good. Any other suggestions from anyone? What else should I swap out?

She crab soup is always good even when it's hot.

When you go to FIG get the pate. It's Like Buttah.

Report back. I love a good food road trip.

I found Hominy Grill to be overrated. However, Jestine's Kitchen is one of my top 5 restaurants ever, anywhere. There's a line but totally, totally worth it. The fried green tomatoes there are the best I've had anywhere, period.

Jazz'd is alright, but it doesn't knock my socks off. I'd hit Local 1110 if you're already considering it. The food is awesome, and they just opened their rooftop bar Perch, which is perfect for an after dinner cocktail. I'd also suggest Cha Bella for a dinner, or Sapphire Grill, which is another of my favorite Savannah spots. Plus you can laugh as you walk past the long line at Lady and Sons since you're heading to a far superior dining experience w/o the wait! (its just next door to L&S). Other than that, Vic's is a great spot for lunch overlooking the river, and Alligator Soul is always good.

            2. You've made good choices, but I think Fat Hen on John's Island in Charleston is a fine choice. We ate exceptionally well there earlier this year.

              1. FIG and Husk are MUSTS but I would also throw in Poogans Porch and FISH Restaurant.

                  Poogan's for brunch only.

                  Hank's for seafood.

                  1. re: uluv282

poogan's was very dissappointing the last time I was there. Cold food and the place needed to be cleaned. Won't go back.

I'd give a second to fat hen. Never had a bad meal there and very reasonable prices.
