has anyone ever tried to make malt ball candy?

i want to make my own malt balls for a homemade version of thrifty's chocolate malted krunch. i have looked everywhere for candy recipes that are not just malt powder mixed with white chocolate without much luck. this would be a sponge or honeycomb type candy, right?

I was warned off making these because it's supposed to be pretty difficult to keep the malt candy part dry enough that it doesn't shrivel up before it's coated. I wish there was a way to just eat the malt part with no coating!

I have the CIA textbook on confectionary - I'll check it when I have a chance to see if they have a recipe.

It does seem to be that shattery "seafoam" type candy, doesn't it? But not exactly...
I hope someone who knows candymaking will see this. The online recipes that mix malt powder with white chocolate -- I don't get how that would produce the dry (but delicious!) malted milk ball texture.
