3. Tupelo Honey vs. HomeGrown (in general, and specifically the fried chicken)

Thanks!

  1. Luella's - thumbs up
    Barbeque Inn - thumbs down

    1. I've tried Luella's a couple of times, and haven't been too blown away. It may just be that I'm a transplanted Yankee, though. A number of my locally-born co-workers sing the praises of both Luella's and the Barbecue Inn, but I like 12 Bones and Big Mountain BBQ in Waynesville.

I really like Homegrown--they're definitely working many of the same angles as Tupelo, but at a much lower price and a more low-rent ambiance. I like the place--the people are friendly, the food has been, by and large, VERY good (the only things that were just sort of "meh" that I've tried so far were the hummus plate and the chicken-broccoli casserole, which seems to be a popular weekly blue plate special). I haven't had a chance to do a broad enough across-the-board taste test at either Tupelo or Homegrown to give a hugely rounded and thoughtful essay on the subject. I'd HIGHLY recommend you give Homegrown a shot, though. You don't get those kick-butt biscuits and jam like you do at Tupelo, but apart from that, you get food on the same wavelength at lower prices and less of a wait. Homegrown's got beer and wine, too. ;) Just FYI. I'm always there at the wrong time to take advantage!

I think Luella's is good - I stick with the pulled pork, fried okra, mac and cheese, and of course those yummy hushpuppies. The times I've tried the beans, salad, turkey, and a few other options, I wasn't as happy - nothing was bad, just not special. But I think my order is pretty solid, and I definitely get cravings for my pork with two sides and a cold beer. I like the owner, they play good tunes, and the staff is friendly too.

My husband thinks the fried chicken at Homegrown is as good as TH's. That's not my typical order so I can't vouch, but I will say that I love both TH and HG. The prices at HG can't be beat.

I recently purchased the new TH cookbook and was pleased to see that most of the menu items are represented in the book. It's a good one - simple recipes, lots of pictures - very well done.

And don't forget Early Girl! That's another one of my favorites for southern food...

Me, too! I'm sad to see how Early Girl seems to get kicked around some on Chowhound. I've never had a bad experience or a bad meal there.....

      2. Thanks for the comments... will definitely give HomeGrown and Luella's a try.

The Barbeque Inn closed permanently this past Fourth of July weekend.
