Whats good around Langstaff and Hwy 400?

dmartins123 Apr 14, 2011 02:12 PM

Work just moved up to Langstaff and Hwy400 in Vaughan. At first, it looks like a suburban wasteland but I am sure there are some hidden gems around here.

Does anyone have any special places to share?

Please dont make me eat the Terriaki Experience anymore. Although I am glad that I am driving distance to the new 5 Guys burgers....

I'd try out Autostrada. It's the newish place from the owner of Trio, my go to neighbourhood Italian joint (in North Toronto). I haven't tried it, so can't vouch for it, but it's close to you and definitely worth a shot.

And actually, I'd love to hear a report back if you do. Would be nice to have a place to pop into on the rare occasion I'm in the area.

My experience has been consistent. The only fail I can recall is the time my margherita pizza was seriously lacking salt in the crust. But I generally stick to the pastas (the orrechiette with sausage and rapini is my favourite). Mind you, there's nothing particularly special about Trio (other than the fact that they had a wood burning pizza oven from Napoli long before Libretto did). I don't think of it as a destination, but a solid neighbourhood spot at a good price point.

A related question - does anyone have recommendations for a nice dinner in the same area? I'm staying here for the next 6-8 months, and my colleagues and I try to do at least one dinner together each week. We have a pretty good dinner allowance ($85), but I can't convince them to eat very far from our hotel, which limits our options.

So far Autostrada is my favorite. I had a very nice pasta with oxtail one night, and a great salad and pizza on another visit. We've also been to Canyon Creek in the Vaughan Mills shopping center - I wasn't crazy about it, but my colleagues like the prime rib.

What other places can you recommend for a nice dinner out among coworkers?

I also work around here - there is a place called Green Mango in the plaza on the south side of Langstaff just east of Weston beside a Pizza Nova that does a surprisingly good Pho.

If you don't mind the drive over to Langstaff and Dufferin, Sofra Grill is pretty good for kebobs. Price is very good for the portion.

            Vicentina Meats Ltd
            125 Edilcan Dr
            Concord, ON,

This is located east off of Jane St, it's the first street north of langstaff.
There is a local gem here, Italian sandwiches, chicken, steak, porchetta.
It's a great sit down location, gets extremely busy at lunch hour. You will not be dissapointed.
Bonus is they have meats you can purchase to take home, porchetta and some other specialty items. Go here for lunch and enjoy, the steak sandwich is amazing.

Southern Rub Smoke House for very good BBQ at Langstaff and Pine Valley. On a good day, their brisket is to die for.

I always liked the panini place in the mall at the southwest corner of Weston & Hwy 7. Fairly priced, decent sandwiches. I'm partial to the sausage on a bun with onions and hot peppers. Decent quality sausage, lots of onions, just enough heat for a nice sting. They do veal, eggplant in season, chicken, steak, etc. Also enjoy a side of spiced olives (hot or plain available). You can do a Calabrese sausage with a fresh bun if that's your thing. Simple, tasty, portable - one of my fav on the road meals.

Never tried it but there's a place near Langstaff and Keele called "the big Panini" that looks pretty interesting.

I'm pretty sure this is a pic from that place:

That pic is not the same place. I just went there to give it a shot. It's almost identical to California Sandwhiches, but I actually like California a bit better.
