Where did you run into the term "Romanian pastrami"? I ask because it makes a difference whether you are looking for something from Romanian cuisine or you are looking specifically for Romanian pastrami.
"Romanian pastrami" is the pastrami you know where to find and know how to make. The delis of my childhood used to call this type of cured beef Romanian pastrami on their menus - now most just use the word pastrami. Available at the usual Jewish deli suspects.
As I understand it, there is no pastrami as such in Romanian cuisine. A Romanian friend tells me that a curing process with a name somewhat similar to (but not) "pastrami" is used for many foods and is more likely to be pork, chicken, or goose than beef.
my general wiki reading lead me to understand what you're saying, that "romanian pastrami" is really just pastrami these days and came from those of romanian jewish background.
but what made me curious was that someone on the philly board from quebec had mentioned they're entirely unsatisfied with all their options in quebec for montreal smoked meat (lack of fat or use of fatty enough cuts) that they go out and specifically purchase "romanian pastrami" instead. it seemed like a curious statement and so i wanted to see if such a thing were available here.
