Cheap eats in Frankfurt

Will be staying near Am Main, downtown in early May. Any suggestions? Thanks!

A little off the mainline tourist path in Sachsenhausen, but very traditional:

Had the grilled Kassler w/ Sauerkraut here, and of course the "Ebbelwoi". We also tried the Handkäse and I forget what with Grüne Soße...basically all the Frankfurt hits. The food was very good and the atmosphere is a lot of fun.

The main street going from thw train station to the central shopping area, Kaiserstrausse, has about 10 street vendors that come during the work week I believe, it may be a farmers market.

Apart from the regular weiners, krauts and steaks on that massive charcoal grill, there are horse meats, salami's and a few other tasty tid bits to try.

There is a market at Konstablerwache station at the east end of Zeil (the shopping area) every saturday if I remember correctly.

as for the Kaiserstr. trek, be forewarned that you will be in the seediest part of Frankfurt.

which is better than most, if not all the cities, I have ever visited. Heck I feel less safe strolling around downtown Toronto than I did anywhere in Frankfurt.

well sure, I am talking in the context of Germany, one of the safest and most prosperous lands on the planet. so yes it is not THAT bad, but the uninitiated needs to be aware that we are talking about one of the seediest red light districts of the country.

Point taken...Hey GirlFriday, Warning, you might see a neon sign indicating 'adult entertainment', betting saloons and people who haven't shaved in 3 days.... and backpackers

wow look, Frankfurt ist meine zweite Heimstadt, I love it and have memories there since early childhood, but its Hauptbahnhof area is not the most appealing and inviting place in Germany and can be at times a bit creepy. I am trying to give some general commonsense advice here, why you feel the need to respond to it in a defensive and sarcastic tone is beyond me!

I didn't mean to come off as disrespectful...i apologize if I did...just being my own sarcastic self.

I like walking down Leipziger Str. (U6-U7 Station same name). Kish Persian restaurant there is not too bad, not too expensive either

I can't say that I know where Am Main is exactly, does that mean you are staying near the river?

In any case, a few favorites in central Frankfurt:

Kleinmarkthalle - large indoor food market for self catering and a few small tables for eating in; check out the Italian place on the second floor (only a few small tables) and try their house made pastas or yummy antipasta plates or wait in the insanely long line on the first floor for a fat piece of warmed sausage (a local favorite)

Cafe Karin - casual and tasty restaurant

Feinkost Meyer on Freßgass - (not to be confused with the high end restaurant run by the same kitchen!) this is a deli where you can buy pre-made salads, sandwiches, and various daily warm dishes to take away

Feinkost Ebert on Freßgass - same idea as above, some outdoor seating

Klosterhof - casual German restaurant; huge portions!

If you are here on a Friday there is an open air street market with various options on Schillerstraße. And if you would like a good cup of strong coffee, the local version of Starbucks is called Wacker's Kaffee, one just around the corner from Cafe Karin. If you are here on a Sunday, check out Siesmayer Cafe in the afternoon (traditionally btwn 2 & 4) for the fairly self explanatory German tradition of Coffee & Cake.
