When is the lobster season?

caineroad Apr 13, 2011 09:16 PM

Hey chowhound,

I'd like to buy a bunch of lobster to make a great family dinner, when is the best season for lobster we can get cheap deals per lb here in toronto?

Here is a link to the Department of Fisheries lobster season, with a map: http://www.ats.agr.gc.ca/sea-mer/4803...
This was produced in 2004, so it may be slightly different now, but it is a result of agreement between U.S. and Canada, so it is fairly stable.
March 1 in Bay of Fundy, and April 20 east and south from Newfoundland seem to be the early start dates.
There is a large area on the Grand Bank open all year.

Cheap deals per pound are usually available at the T&T stores, but they may not be able to say when the lobsters were caught. Reliable fish stores, such as Bill's or Diana's, should have up to date information on their products.

Lobster season is all year depending where you are. Some areas in the east have 2 seasons staggered.....That is why we can get Lobster all year. The question to ask your fishmonger is...where and when was this lobster caught? Too many of the Lobsters we see in Toronto have been sitting in holding tanks for too long.....

speaking to that, Hooked does never-tanked lobster on the weekends. You have to call ahead to reserve it though.
