Glass Jars?

b

Any thoughts as to where in Manhattan I can buy wide-mouth glass jars? I prefer to put things in glass, and when I make tomato sauce or soup, it's easier to pour the liquid into a wider mouth jar.
I have some glass jars which I saved from store-bought things, but I really need more.
Thanks

Zabar's (upstairs) sells wide mouth canning jars (Ball, I think). I know I've seen pints and quarts there; not sure about wide mouth 1/2 pints. Bowery Kitchen Supplies inside Chelsea Market also carries some, though I'm not sure of the sizes. You could give each place a call to see if they have exactly what you need.

        Don't pay Zabar's fancy prices.

When I bought them last year, Zabar's prices were lower than anywhere else I found, including Bowery Kitchen. And I needed them right away. Later in the season, I planned ahead and ordered online but that's not helpful if someone needs it immediately.

For the OP: wide mouth canning jars are what you describe - straight with no "indent" shoulders near the top. If you have enough lead time, you can order them by the case on line for really really cheap.

Whole Foods sells them for $4ish. And I don't know how helpful this information will be to you, but if you're ever in a position to cruise yard sales, people often give canning jars away. That's where I get mine.

i bought a case of 12 wide mouth quart sized jars at whole foods last fall for a canning project for around 18 bucks i think - they were actually cheaper there then bowery kitchen or panhandler.

Thanks, all.I guess I'll make a trip to Chelsea Market and check it out. I don't really want/need canning jars. What I really want is jars like gefilte fish comes in.. .. same diameter from top to bottom, without that narrower, indented upper part.

They sell them at my local hardware store (Saifee, 7th & 1st). Depending on your neighborhood, check your hardware store. Also Broadway Panhandler, The Container Store, and Kmart.

I'm pretty sure Zabar's carries the wide mouth jars, but only in quart and below. Here are some other options: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/728344

WOW!!! These suggestions are fabulous!! So many choices. I thank you all. I especially appreciate LNG's naming ("wide mouth canning jars") what I am searching for, and the link that Jung Mann provided.
I will look into Whole Foods and Ace Hardware as they are nearby.
              Thank you all, again.
