Dinner in Gaslamp district
Heading down to San Diego for one night next Saturday and staying at Hard Rock. I'd love to go somewhere other than Nobu which is in the hotel - any recommendations for somewhere within walking distance?
Thanks in advance!

You should check Searsucker out. It's not perfect, but as a whole package it's pretty appealing. If you do, try to go with a small group who are willing to share (more fun than as a couple, I think), and go heavy on the small plates (even if that means you order only one entree per two people, say). I thought the cocktails were interesting but weren't as universally crowd pleasing -- you'll probably find one you like, but you might find several you don't love.

re: Beach Chick
Sorry for the delay - so we went to Searsucker. Loved the cocktails, great service. The menu was very intriguing, but unfortunately I didn't feel the execution was there. Many of the dishes were underseasoned, and certain things (farm bird lollipops) were simply not good. Don't think I'd return.

re: bizzwriter
It is with great reluctance I agree with steviewagg. I went for lunch one day- I can throw a rock from my studio window- and was treated as if I was an unwelcome interruption in their otherwise busy day. Just asking for a menu was sufficient to get the nasty eyeball. I figured my lack of tattoos and youthful exuberance made me unqualified for entry to their Palace of No Ketchup.
Now that I think about it again, I'll look around for that rock.

re: Fake Name
Oh well. Guess I'll have to chalk up my good experience to beginner's luck. While I still have a bit of youthful exuberance, I am tat-free. Surely you and steveswag aren't painting Noble Experiment with the same tarry paintbrush, are you? My "date" and I had a truly transcendent evening there (which no doubt colored the dinner that immediately followed at Neighborhood).

re: Josh
Pfft. Not only have I been to Berlin, I took the aging s-bahn train too far and ended up in East Berlin. The kind military officers were as displeased to see me as, well, the staff of Neighborhood.
To be fair, I've not been to Noble Experiment, and it's my hope the name stands for a flirtation with courtesy.

re: honkman
I just sent my husband to Cafe Chloe this morning for breakfast - he's there at a conference, staying at the Omni. Said it was closed and another restaurant was opened in it's place.
I'm planning on joining him this weekend. Want to stay local - we're from LA so love the thought of walking everywhere! So for the best steaks, people seem to agree on Cowboy Star?
For seafood, what would people recommend? Oceanaire?-----

Hmmm, I don't know if I want to tell him that I gave him the wrong directions! We always have fights over this. I insist my directions were right - he just mistook them! ;o)
I've continued to read the board - some people recommend Starlight and 1500 Ocean. Thoughts?

re: xox
Chloe is 9th at G. NE corner.
Most of the streets are alpha and numeric.
Cowboy Star http://www.thecowboystar.com/ is on 10th, just North of Market, which is one block South of G.
