Land of Kush - Vegan Soul Food Baltimore
This storefront restaurant is great. Their collared greens, rice and beans, and live kale are great. I like the fake meat BBQ best. Try the BBQ over the rice and beans. They got a great review in the City Paper today. The owner is really nice. They will let you try anything and combine a platter anyway you want it. Just ask. Land of Kush has a very casual atmosphere and cool vibe. Even if you are not a vegetarian or vegan, you should give it a try. It is just good food.

re: dinwiddie
Cool! There is a similar place in DC, SoulVeg.

I think both are affiliated with the Hebrew Israelites, a group of African-Americans that practice a variation of Judaism that includes only eating vegan food. They have a neighborhood in Dimona, Israel.
At SoulVeg, I recommend the sweet potato pie and the vegan mac n' cheese.

re: SimonF
SimonF: Why not get your facts right before putting out false info! There's no overt religious connection at Land of Kush. I can't speak for SoulVeg in DC. Why was it necessary to bring it up? The food at Land of Kush is great, and the staff there is too - PERIOD! Want to know more about the owners? Check out their web site.

> fake meat BBQ
I really don't mind the imitation meat but most of these places focus so much on the "You won't believe it's veggie!" that they forget to serve good, hearty, vegetables. I guess they figure you can get veggies anywhere. Besides Greens the only veggies on the menu is the cabbage and squash combo.

re: GraydonCarter
Graydon, I agree with you generally. They certainly have some items like that on the menu. Their live kale and raw sesame spinach are not like that at all. They have a tomato and cuc. salad that is great. They have great yams and rice and beans. I have had steamed broc. there, too. You can eat lots of good things on the menu that are not fake (I can't believe it isn't meat) entrees.
BTW, Graydon. I love your hair and magazine. The Monkey Bar is great, too. I can't believe you post on this board.

re: GraydonCarter
ehh, I often accuse close friends of non-existence - no need for birthday cards that way.
my blog - just a wish, an idle thought. maybe someday. but then I have several fake and pointless ventures I claim. I did change the name the other day when it turned out somebody had a similar one. If I'm going to cause confusion, it's going to be on purpose.
cheers!

re: dinwiddie
It does sound crazy but Land of Kush is fantastic. I wouldn't be surprised if ravenous carnivores even enjoyed it.
Here's another good article about it: http://www.urbanitebaltimore.com/balt...
