Otherwise you wouldn't be craving it. Unless you're under the influence of 9 beers and a persuasive and attractive Québécoise, as I was when I last had it 15 years ago.

For many of those things, you'd be very well off right here in Montreal. Can't vouch for the grits, though. But then again, all of those things are extremely simple (and rewarding!) to make by yourself.

        1. re: Fake Name

Being a Quebecoise myself ,I special order curd cheese ( from the east coast )at whole food . I have 10 bl in my freezer as we speak and I get my family back home to send packets of the sauce now and then . I go to Angelo's burger and get 2-3 orders of fresh cut french fries to go and make poutine all the time at home ! ....Theyre is nothing like it around here so When I make it for friends with a cold beer ....Priceless :)

        2. Oh- I make a Peanut Butter and Nutella sandwhich nearly every morning- over it.

But not to rain on the thread.....; )

          1. I just couldn't imagine you fanging down a bowl of poutine (carb overload) but, softshell crabs, which are in season soon, YES!

            1. Blue Water has a soft-shell crab sandwich. Poutine is on Alchemy's brunch menu, and is very tasty.

Cheeseburger on brioche bun can be found at Cafe 910.

Watermelon juice is sold in containers ready-to-go at People's Co-Op and Whole Foods (Juice Evolution makes it).

                Nothing like fresh watermelon juice!

              2. The MIHO Gastrotruck offers poutine.

It's just OK. Alchemy's kills it.

No the MIHO truck's is aweful.

                    1. re: cstr

The problem is a lack of cheese curds in San Diego.

                      1. re: DougOLis

I have seen cheese curds from time to time at both Trader Joes and at Vennissimo Cheese in Mission Hills.

                2. Smoking Goat offers a burger on brioche. Great, now I'm craving it too!

                  1. Good luck on the cheese grits and shrimp. Low country cooking has never seemed to have caught on out here. I have heard of a place up in West Hollywood area (a couple of Lakers were investors) that does it, but the name escapes me, and I am not sure if it is even still around.

                        And Aquamoree on Prospect...

                        "Shrimp n' Grits"
Blackened shrimp, chorizo cream, cheesy stone ground Anson Mills grits

Or maybe you can talk Cameron Woods at Amaya (at the Grand Del Mar) into making you a batch. Here's his recipe:

                        1. re: bizzwriter

That dish at Aquamoree is pretty tasty.

                          1. re: bizzwriter

The blackened shrimp and grits with a chorizo cream sounds beyond fab..
Is chorizo cream like making gravy with out the meat but using the drippings?
                            ; )

                      2. - Poutine: Jayne's Gastropub has a decent one. (If you are in LA and crave a poutine go Animal for their oxtail poutine one of the richest and tasties versions)
                        - Cheeseburger on a brioche bun: Starlite's burger is served with Gruyere cheese on a brioche bun
                        - Watermelon juice: You can get it at TJ

                        2. "What are you craving?"

As always, I’m craving the Tony Roma's Onion Loaf. Lightly battered deep fried onion rings that then get shoved in a bread pan and baked and served in a pile. Deliciously greasy and yummy slathered up with BBQ sauce. I’m not looking to go to Tony Roma's but wouldn’t mind finding some place in SD that does something like them.

And I’m not sure if one can crave something they never have had - poutine - but that’s probably a physiological debate for the not about food board. Does anyone in SD actually use cheese curds with their poutine? MIHO just does the grated white cheddar. It’s good with a light gravy and mushrooms but it doesn’t really have the proper cheese to fries ratio that you see in all those pictures from Canada. Hey now!

                          1. You can get watermelon juice at any of the boba places, especially tea station.

cheeseburger on a brioche, doesn't burger lounge do that?

Cheese grits and shrimp can be had at R-Gang although when I had it a few weeks ago, the spice nearly blew my taste buds off. If you get it there, I'd tell them to use a bit more finesse.

I don't think Burger Lounge's are on brioche buns - they are much too light and soft.
Starlite definitely rocks the burger as well as everything else they do!

                            2. There use to be a vendor at the OB Farmer's Market that sold a huge, gourmet version of a peanut butter cup all wrapped up in gold foil. It was pretty tasty.

You tried Bite of Boston for a lobster roll at Governor/Regents? I've also heard the lobster roll at Studio Diner is very good, but it's $22 versus $12 for BoB.

I have an aversion to paying $22 for a lobsta roll at studio diner but their patty melt kicks ass!

                                    1. re: Beach Chick

But no problem with the $25 I see here on the Neptune's Oyster menu I hold here in my hand.
If it was good enough for Patrick and Angie in chapter 2 of Lehane's Moonlight Mile it's good enough to be on my list for my trip to Boston.

Coming to SF and then Tu Tu Tun Lodge for a week in Sept..anything new for your favorite chicka?

                                  2. Giant fresh crepe with chino strawberries, balsamic drizzle and Mascarpone vanilla whipped cream at Barbarella.

Oh, and to knock off early and enjoy a vodka-tonic at one of her flower-filled, garden, sidewalk tables.

Thanks Beach Chick, my schedule does always allow me time for my two guilty pleasures...eating out and Chowhound! Given how well they do the red meat thing, I'm really interested in trying the fried chicken at Cowboy Star. I tried the fried chicken at Craft and Commerce a couple of months back. It was good and it was juicy, but I think there is better. I would really like to see some of our city's top chef's put their twists on this old school favorite.

The hotel is great for the price - clean spacious and cheap. We wanted to book a second night but they sold out.

                                                                1. re: kare_raisu

Also had drinks at the Hotel Cesar on the patio facing Revolucion. We went inside first and I thought the remodel looked fab. But...I have to say, my maggie was a little disappointing, not the best one I've ever had and I expected more after the hype about the Hotel Cesar being revamped. That said, I am more than willing to give them a 2nd and 3rd chance.

Where is La Corriente? Taqueria or regular resto? Same for Sospeso, where and what do you recommend?

                                                                  1. re: DiningDiva

La Corriente is 6th and Madero I believe

I liked all the mariscos there - a tj style paella, chorizo de abulon sopes etc. etc. Its kitschy and cool

Sospeso is incredible you order by where you want your coffee from - seriously some of the best coffee ive had. its behind the calimax in zona rio

BTW saw your post on Tecate - only been there once for a very brief visit, but it seemed like a very charming town. Is there much there, there? (Went with a bunch of colleagues who insisted on doing dinner at, of all places, an Italian restaurant in Tecate...)

                                                                            1. re: cgfan

Tecate is - for lack of a better term - quaint. Much smaller and slower pace than Tijuana. We were meeting up with the regional governor for Slow Food Baja. Asao was gorgeous, but we ended up having dinner back at Ranas in Spring Valley

Have you tried West Bean coffee here in SD?

                                                                              1. re: DiningDiva

                                                                                1. re: foodiechick

You might also consider the Global Entry program, especially if you travel to other international destinations. It's one of the "trusted traveler" programs and there is no trip minimum requirement. Sentri card holders are allowed to use the Global Entry kiosks at customs at participating airports. http://www.globalentry.gov/

There are new Ready lanes at both San Ysidro and Otay. To use the ready lane everyone in your car must have an ID - passport, passport card, Sentri card or Global Entry card - that has the RFID chip in it. There is special equipment installed to detect and read it at each lane. (Yep, Big Brother is alive and well). The Ready and Sentri lanes were moving at a steady clip last week when I crossed at Otay, the regular lanes, not so much. BTW, for the last several years new passports (inlcuding renewals) have had the RFID chip, which contains all your pertinent personal data, implanted in them

All trusted traveler programs require an extensive background search and not everyone who applies is successful getting in to the program. From what I've heard and my friends who already have Sentri cards, it takes about 4-6 months after you've applied to actually get the personal interview with customs and border patrol.

                                                                                  1. re: DiningDiva

                                                                                    1. re: Fake Name

                                                                                      1. re: Fake Name

                                                                                    2. re: foodiechick

You send in your passport and a fee (about $15) and two passport pictures. Because we live in Baja, we did our application through the U.S. consulate and did not have to surrender our passports. After a five day wait, we were notified by email of the cards' arrival at the consulate.

Here is the link to the U.S. State Department's information page and PDF application form: http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppt_...

West Bean - Seen their participation at a couple of our local "coffee geek" events, but never had a chance to try except for one of their single origins improperly served as an espresso. (Too unbalanced for espresso, most SO's are, though it may have been perfect for use in brewing. I blame the cafe vs. the roaster, unless it was pushed to them for espresso use.)

Would love to find a cafe that features their espresso blend. Even called them to see if their blend is available at retail so I can try out a bag.

                                                                                      1. re: cgfan

Yeah, I think you have to go up to LA for the Global Entry program. With Sentri you just have to go to San Ysidro or Otay. Since my usual points of entry are either our border or IAH (Houston) and I could use a Sentri at Houston, that's what makes the most sense.

I'm not sure how widesly used West Bean is. They're pretty small - just 2 brothers - and I don't know how big they've grown, or want to grow, their business.

If you're ever up for doing a coffee road trip SOB give me a holler. You're so knowledgable about coffee it would be a treat to hear your comments and impressions. I suspect I'd learn way more about coffee than I expected :-)

                                                                                        1. re: DiningDiva

I recall five years ago meeting a cafe owner at Caffe Calabria's "Barista Jam". He was there to pick up tips for his newly-opened cafe in Puerto Nuevo and a stand at the border crossing. At the time I was already planning a taco crawl with friends, so I took his card and sought out his cafe when in Puerto Nuevo.

Was not expecting much at all, but was surprised with a good and competent, though not mind-blowing, shot. Particularly liked the obvious training his baristas were given; they knew the more arcane lingo and properly "managed" the pull by throwing out the first shot when it didn't look right, served in heated porcelain without even asking.

Wonder if he's still there. His shop was called "Que Pasa Calabaza Mexicano". Never did find his concession at the border, either. http://tinyurl.com/3npm85y

As to a SOB trip, hearing about yet another cafe to check out does increase the odds, though even for this coffee geek they'd be an aside to the main event, that of finding some great eats.

                                                                                          1. re: cgfan

Good eats in Tijuana is pretty easy these days. I have friends coming down from NorCal at Thanksgiving and we're planning a taco crawl, you're welcome to join us if you'd like. I was at Asao in Tecate yesterday, what a beautiful facility - http://www.santuariodiegueno.com/engl... . We didn't stay for dinner, but I'd really love to go back and try it. Real farm to table, many alums from Rancho la Puerta gardens and kitchens. Easy border access.

                                                                                        2. re: cgfan

From their website, it looks like they are focusing on wholesale/mail order and they host coffee tastings at the Farm House Cafe.

In apology, here's a little tidbit, "Que Pasa Calabasa?" (note the spelling) is Spanish rhyming slang for, "What's up, Dude?"

                                                                                            1. re: Gypsy Jan

Haha... It really puzzled me to read the West Bean part in connection with Puerto Nuevo, but then I thought, anything's possible. So is the cafe that's pictured in my link the one you are referring to that has since closed?

Also might you know if Farmhouse Cafe sells bags of West Bean's roasts, and in particular their espresso blend? I've yet to try their product, and am very curious to try it out at home...

                                                                                              1. re: cgfan

The mystery deepens. That is not the coffee house that I knew. It was located at the very front of the entrance gate to Puerto Nuevo, on the left hand side. They didn't have any fancy signage like that.

The place that I knew was small, but very nicely decorated and, yes, the beans were exceptional (Mexican fair trade) and, yes, the espresso was properly drawn by the barista. I had a business card from the owner and if I find it, I will post the information because he also had a business in San Diego.

As to whether "Que Pasa Calabasa Mexicano" is still in business in Puerto Nuevo, a web search turned up nothing, but I will continue to investigate and report back.

In addition, I don;t know if the Farmhouse Cafe sells bags of West Bean's products.

                                                                                                1. re: Gypsy Jan

On the north side of the "village", towards the Hwy and on the left side. I'm thinking they're the same place - there can't be two cafes in that "town", can there?

                                                                                    4. re: DiningDiva

The owner sat down with us and gave us a tasting of multiple coffees - the best for me being from Moyobamba Peru, another from Guerrero state, and another from India thats flavor had been affected by monsoon. There's another special brew thats almost whiskey like that takes 8 hours to extract/brew.

                                                                                      1. re: kare_raisu

                                                                                    6. re: kare_raisu

They just have different objective. I *still* haven't made it to La Querencia and I'm dying to try it. Well, that and Eriza. Poco a poco, I'll get there :-). Going to Tecate this afternoon.

Will be back in TJ in a few weeks, will check out La Corriente soon.

Pete's Quality Meat in Little Italy also has meatball sandwiches, but I always wind up ordering the sausage.

Since he qualified his statement that he wanted it BIG...it doesn't get any bigger than Gus's!

                                                                                        1. re: ChowBaccus

                                                                                          1. re: JRSD

LOVE the Portugese Sausage and Eggs, one of my favorites too :-). My mom love's Gus's because they have a senior menu for breakfast that's pretty good, but way smaller portions so she doesn't feel overwhelmed with food.

We're not wild about their subs or their pizza, but breakfast, that's another story. Still better than the Lake Murray Cafe (and Coco's for that matter).

We have been on a breakfast kick at Shirley's kitchen, the pork chops and eggs were really good and the pancakes were better than most of the other places around.

So far we have been fortunate enough to avoid Cocos.

Island, my go-to place for the beef and sausage combo is DiCrescenzo's Chicago On A Bun in RB. Mmm! It should be dipped so it’s soaked unless you don’t want it that way. Get the spicy hot pepper mix (in little to-go containers in the soda fridge) and you might want to get two of these combo’s so you can have a second one….LOL!

I can’t say they do this sausage the same way the old just plain DiCrescenzo's did it, but it’s the same way that Buster’s (long gone) in Sorrento Valley did it. And probably the same way anything called Chicago On A Bun did ‘em.

Got my meatball sub from Filippi's in Mira Mesa/The Ranch this weekend. Hardly a CH favorite - for pizza at least - but it was pretty tasty. Also got a sausage sub which was okay – I would have liked a spicier sausage. Both come with red sauce and they put cheese and bell peppers on them if you want. $14ish total and you know what? I couldn't eat it all!!!

                                                                                            1. re: FireFlyFiftyFive

The very first night in my house in Scripps (I lived there from 1985-2010) was a sausage pizza from that Fillippi's. I slept on the floor that night because my bed was still in the moving truck.

Great stuff if you've grown up on it; it's quite a unique taste. (Back in the day the kid who'd bring in some Li Hing Mui to school would be the popular one for the day...)

Locally one can find some amount of Li Hing Mui and related product at Ranch 99 or Marukai, but for a greater selection (and much more) one needs to go to Aji Ichiban in San Gabriel. (There actually used to be an Aji Ichiban cart in Mission Valley Center in front of the theaters...)

Then there are the "crack seed shops" in Hawaii - wonderful places full of snacks based upon fruits, seeds, and seafood. (They'll put Li Hing on anything in Hawaii, including popcorn.)

                                                                                                              1. re: cgfan

It might be best to try them in congee (rice porridge [sort of]) before you go buying half-dozens at the supermarket. The Chin's next to the Holiday Inn on Miramar x I-15 might have it on their breakfast menu, but I'm not sure?

Had high hopes. Dashed. The pie had sweated in its saran wrap and gotten clammy on the outside; was dry from being frozen, on inside. The filling was right, though, even if the cake/cookie needed work. Time to drag out my spattered Maida Heatter whoopie recipe. . .

My mother's friends (read...the 85 y.o. and up set) don't care for Gingham at all. In their opinion it's "overpriced and the food isn't very good". OTOH, an employee of mine who lives within walking distance of Gingham likes it and says it's actually pretty good. He was there recently with his on-again/off-again girlfriend who is a reformed vegan, but still primarily vegetarian. They made a complete vegetarian meal by simply ordering off the appetizer menu. He deemed that meal very successful.

Whether Gingham is good or not, it's been a shot in the arm to downtown La Mesa, just as Terra was a shot in the arm for that godforesaken stretch of El Cajon Blvd. Both are usually pretty busy, which is a good sign that the dreaded East County may be ready for something other than Anthony's and The Brigantine

I had one. It was just ok. The bread was mediocre at best.

I have had fantastic cheesy shrimp & grits from Luc's Bistro in Poway. I have ordered them three or four time since Chef Phillipe left and sold the place. They are now only offered as an app, but they will make as an entree upon request. Two times they have been great, but the last take-out order I had was too salty and garlicy.

As far as cravings go, anyone know where I can find authentic Key Lime pie?

It was either at Brooklyn Girl or BeauBeau. (sp?) Either case, it had been so long since I'd had KLP, I wasn't even sure I was tasting the right thing. It seemed too lemony and not key-limey. If it was Brooklyn Girl, they sell their jars to go.

Beach Chick-- recently had kumamotos at Gabardine or The Fishery. My first and amazing. Going way back, how about Sandia Aqua Fresca? I LOVE Mexican Watermelon Juice, and you can get it lots of places in San Diego. Farmers' mkts, good taco stands.

And Cheese Grits. Mother's Milk to me. My mom's recipe depended on a roll of cajun processed garlic cheese that has vanished, but now she has to substitute Velveeta. Nothing else works. However, I did have a tasty shrimp and grits at Gabardine, to my astonishment.

Had the scallop sandwich at Point Loma Seafoods just the other day. I've had it a couple of times before and was underwhelmed, but this time, the scallops were very fresh, the breading was perfect and fried to a perfect golden brown crispness. Even the tarter sauce, which I am not usually a fan of, was a great compliments. I finally got it. But what I don't get is how after spending so much money on the remodel and serving such fresh seafood, they could serve their sandwiches on that awful bread! But, it doesn't seem to impact the hoards of customers everyday, so I guess there is no motivation to change.

I haven't tried it, but they do everything else so well!

I'd go right around 11 AM, as it gets very crowded after that. The fact that their line is usually 4 times as long as that at La Creperie says volumes.

I also liked Fish Public's version. However, it's been a few months since I had either so you might check to see if they are still on the menus.

Just had some quinoa with wilted greens (heated) eggs, and PESTO. That's what I crave these days. PESTO. And how weird is it that Costco's pesto is annoyingly delicious?

Food was very good, but my gawd was it quiet. As much as I bitch about noise levels in SD restaurants, I think I dislike "pin-drop" dining rooms just as much. I would go back if we have a reason to be downtown, but wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Our current dictator seems to have gone awol and there seems to be little future for our DotM at the moment.

Went there when the Spoleto festival was going on, had a blast. Very walkable city. Lots o' shrimp n' grits. But then all the meals we had were really good.

Is she hungry again?" but I am now beginning to feel that this lady just really appreciates good food, and it is always fun to read about it.
