Soft Shell Crabs!

scarlettb Apr 13, 2011 07:59 AM

It is now mid-April, which is usually about when soft shells start appearing on restaurant menus. Are any restaurants in the area serving them yet ?

Pines of Rome in Bethesda usually has them as a special and they are great. Call them first to find out - 301/657-8775. Don't miss their white pizza as an app.

It is still a little early for local softshells. Most are imported frozen yet. May is when they start to show up properly.

They seem to be showing up early this year. Had a great one at Masa 14 last weekend. And yes, I'm sure it wasn't frozen.

Had lunch at Restaurant Eve today. A softshell crab sandwich was on the menu. Both my wife and I had it. It was our first softshell this year and wonderful.

The first full moon in May is when they usually start to molt. May 17th. However, I have never seen a shedder in the creeks around Annapolis until it gets warmer in June (and with the lousy weather we've been having - could be really late). Frozen soft-shell crabs hold up very well. So much so, that it is often hard to tell the difference from fresh ones. They're served year-round. Try Corduroy.

Had a great soft-shell crab platter from Cameron's in Silver Spring. Two decent-sized, perfectly fried, with fries and slaw, for $8.95. Such a deal.

Sounds like I just found dinner assuming the Oxon Hill location has the same deal.

I had one at Hank's Oyster Bar (the DC location) yesterday and it was terrific.
