Pho recs close to 95/beltway/295?

We've had great pho in the DC area on several trips. This time we're just passing through (or by) DC itself. Any recs for a spot for a Thursday night that wouldn't be far from our route South? We decide between 95/beltway and BW Parkway/295 into Arlington based on traffic conditions, but will be continuing South past Fredericksburg. So 95 in VA is good too.

So recs on either side of DC would be appreciated, but we'd need someplace with parking available.

Thanks for any suggestions!

  1. There are a lot of pho places on your route. I like An Loi in Columbia, MD. It's about 5 minutes off I-95 (take the MD-32 exit going west) and parking is easy. I usually get the grilled meat appetizer and a #9 bowl of pho (which is basically everything plus meatballs).

I've also been to Pho 88 in Beltsville, MD (just off Rte 1 north of the DC beltway), which is decent, but I think An Loi is better and the space is newer (plus Pho 88 doesn't have the grilled meats).

We prefer Pho Dat Trahn over An Loi in the next strip center. Its a matter of personal taste. This lists several places in Laurel and Columbia. - Vietnamese

    2. There are a few choices off the Beltway in VA. Pho Golden Cow on Rt 50 and Graham Rd, across from the Loehmann's Plaza, and Pho Hot on Rt 236 east of the Beltway in Annandale. Both are very good and an easy on and off from the Beltway.

      1. I would recommend Pho 88 in Beltsville. It's not the newest place, but its all about the pho there.

Me too. That's where I usually go for my pho craving. I have friends who love Pho Real in Burtonsville. They drive down from Baltimore to eat there. I haven't been there yet, but I plant to check it out soon.

I have done head-to-head comparisons of Pho 88 and Pho VN One right down the road from them (across the street from Costco) and I have to say, I think PhoVN One is better. The flavour of the broth is more robust.

The only downside about PhoVN One is that it's cash only. Every now and again I forget that that's the case!

              I have too, and I prefer 88.

        2. As a general question, someone told me the pho is better in Northern VA (I think there are more Vietnamese there) but I've never tried it. NoVA is far enough for me that I don't have enough time to visit all the other restaurants I want to try. Has anyone had pho on both sides of the beltway?

And while I really like An Loi, I wish they'd serve it with fresh cilantro. I had pho in Dallas with cilantro and couldn't get enough of it.

          1. If you can deal w/ mixing bowl traffic, at the interchange where 95 splits south from 495 is Pho 495. It's in the Springfield Plaza near Trader Joe's.

A little further down Backlick (about a mile or so) is Pho Cong Ly. I prefer Pho495, though both are good.
