Where's the shad???

Hi all -- would love to get some shad, or even better some shad roe. Anybody know any restaurants, other than the venerable Peppermill, serving shad these days? Or even where to buy fresh shad and roe? Though I'm not sure I want to tackle shad at home...

Thx!
FMM

If you're willing to wait until May 25, the Armstrong's new venture in Old Town--Virtue Feed & Grain--will feature shad roe on the menu.

O'Donnell's in the Kentlands usually has it in the spring.

Thanks, everyone! I'm still on the hunt specifically for restaurants, and if I find any I'll be sure to post. Barring that, it's pretty easy to fry up some roe sacs...now that i know where to shop for them! thanks.

        cheers,
        michelle

Shad was an appetizer at The Majestic in Alexandria about two weeks ago.

I had shad roe at Arucola in Chevy Chase DC last weekend--it was good but very rich (served over creamed spinach).

We last bought boned shad fillet at the Salt River Lobster truck at the Kensington farmers market (Sat 8-12). I prepare baked stuffed shad fillet according to James Beard Fish Cookery's recipe, stuffed with a simple-to-prepare mixture of sliced onion sauteed in butter with thyme, parsley, bread crumb and egg. It is delicious and really enhanced the sweet and delicate flavor of the shad. Sometimes Whole Foods fish counter has the boned shad fillets. Also, the seafood store on Connecticut Ave. in Chevy Chase (can't remember the name, it is about 1 block south of Safeway).

I think I saw it on the menu recently at Vidalia. Equinox also often has it when it is in season (it is one of Chef' Grey's favorite).

I saw it for sale a week or so ago at the P Street Whole Foods.

Elyssa is right, shad roe is definitely at Vidalia. I had some myself. If you don't see it on the menu you should ask about it. I saw it this past weekend at the Arlington Whole Foods.

The Canton Safeway was blowing out shad roe the first week of April, but they're all gone now. You may be too late for this year.

I haven't enjoyed shad, and especially, the roe, in too many years to remember.

The last time I indulged was at the Polo Grill (sadly a missing entity).

But, I do recall that one year I had excellent shad and the roe at the Williamsburg Inn. If you can enjoy the Peppermill, then the Williamsburg Inn isn't far off the mark as far as cuisine, atmosphere, price range, etc. I do suggest that you call ahead to see if they have featured it on their menu.

It's sad, that such a wonderful delicacy isn't more readily available at other dining establishments this time of year. To me, it's as delectable as the offering of soft shell crabs and oysters in season.

Good luck in your attempts to locate shad/roe. If I come across any, I'll certainly let you know. FoiGras
