Westside Breakfast

Hi! I just moved to MDR, and am looking for a breakfast place like my old haunts in Hollywood. There are plenty of greasy spoons out here, but I'd like to find something like La Conversation, Susina Bakery, even Blue Jam. Something with quiche, omelets with goat cheese, and amazing croissants on the menu. I'm sick of Noahs bagels. And yes, I've already been to Gjelina for brunch, and while it is pretty good, it's not totally what I'm looking for. Santa Monica and Mar Vista are about as far as I want to drive, but I would be stoked to find something in Venice. Thanks!!

If you want to eat on the boardwalk, Figtree Cafe and Grill is pretty good. I have had some excellent breakfasts and I have had some so so, but the real draw is their 50% off deal from 8 - 9am everyday of the week.

There's also the FarmShop in Brentwood Country Mart. I haven't been yet, but others have and you can search on the board for specific comments. I do know it is being run by Thomas Keller's Ad Hoc alum and is supposed to serve similar dishes.

La Provence in Brentwood Garden makes excellent quiche and croissants.

Metro Cafe is in Culver City but easy to get to from MdR: 90-East, 405-North, exit at Venice; or just head east on Washington to Washington Place. Solid breakfasts but I don't recall them having baked items like croissants...

I'm not sure what your ideal croissant is, but you also have Amandine on Wilshire right by the border of West LA and Santa Monica. I really like 3 Square's almond croissants, but they are more toothsome than most, and their food is very good as well.

For simpler breakfasts, there are Jinky's, L'Epicerie Market (great crepes), Maxwell Cafe (good waffles), Nichols, Snug Harbor and S & W....some like Cafe Buna and French Market Cafe but I am not thrilled with either. More upscale, Fig at the Fairmont, Hal's, Pacific Dining Car and Tasting Kitchen.

I always drool over the Curious Palate breakfast menu but can never seem to get there early enough! They stop serving really early, like 10 AM, I think? But it really looks good. Fortunately, their lunch menu is great too!

We always go during the Mar Vista Farmer's Market, so it's more 'brunchy' ;)

You should check out 3 Square on Abbott Kinney, La Grand Orange on Main St. in Santa Monica and Sauce on Hampton in Venice as potential replacements for your previous haunts.

Try out Rose Cafe in Venice- their weekend brunches are solid! Favorite dishes include the smoked salmon benedict-style on croissants with dill hollandaise and the puff pastry wrapped salmon dish. Their potatoes are great, too.
