Barbette or Lucia's Bakery would be my first two choices. If you're looking for more of a diner-type experience you could either go for a gut-buster like the Uptown Diner or old school with Our Kitchen on 36th and Bryant.
[Edited to add that the map to the right is wrong - Our Kitchen is not in North Minneapolis, but is just East of Lakewood Cemetery on 36th Street.]

I like Our Kitchen a lot, wonderful hashbrowns and super-friendly staff. BUT be prepared to wait, both for a stool at the counter and for your meal. I've been there approx. four times and it took over 45 minutes once we had ordered. So, if you're not in a hurry or dying from hunger, it's worth a try.

I love Our Kitchen too.
A great spot with more seats is the Sunnyside Up Cafe on 27th & Lyndale:
