Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Looking for good value, quiet downtown restaurant

Hi. I'm going to be in New York on April 16, 17 and 18. My husband and I are having dinner with some old friends who we haven't seen in over 25 years. We're all meeting first with my daughter, a New Yorker, for drinks in the Meat Packing District. Then my daughter and her fiance go their own way, and the four of us will dine together. We need a restaurant that is quiet and conducive to conversation, but also relatively inexpensive/good value for this reunion, because i don't really know our friends' financial circumstances. Preferable we'd like to stay in the Chelsea/West Village/Meat Packing area. Suggestions would be appreciated.

  1. Get out of the meatpacking area if you want anything remotely quiet or adult.

I recommend Trestle on Tenth, which is not far at all, on 10th Ave near 24th St. It's a lovely Swiss influenced restaurant, good food and pleasant service, and easy to talk in. If it's nice weather, they have a comfortable garden in back where you can dine as well.

I strongly 2nd Trestle. Not cheap but not overly expensive as Manhattan restaurants go.

    2. Trestle on Tenth is a good suggestion. Another place we like is Bottino, two doors down from Trestle, on 10th, b/t 24th & 25th. Tasty Italian food, good service, and pleasant atmospherics. They also have a lovely back garden.

      1. its on the casual side but elephant and castle is quiet, quaint, and has very solid food. on the inexpensive side.

another good idea is da andrea on 13th for italian...inexpensive but a little bit louder. no one will have a problem loving da andrea.
