Indonesian food in San Diego

  • 4

Well it appears there is no Burmese food available in San Diego so I thought I would try Indonesian. I just got back from a cruise on a ship with Indonesian staff and had a couple nice dishes. I recall fondly some excellent Indonesian food I had years ago in Amsterdam and not as long ago in Oakland. Her eis San Diego my son and I once went to a place in the same shopping center as China Max that had a sign indicating it was Indonesian. We waited 15 minutes for service (it was during open hours, the open sign was out and, obviously the place was open and two other parties were eating). I even got up and went back towrds the kitchen and asked for a waiter. Never was served. Never saw a staff member leave the kitchen.

Any other place in San Diego to buy Indoneisan food?

  1. Good luck on this one too! There's only one restaurant in San Diego that I'm aware of that advertises itself as serving Indonesian food: Bali Thai Cafe on Camino del Rio South. Never eaten there so can't comment on the quality nor on the Indonesian-ness.

If you've really got it bad for Indonesian food, then your best bet is probably making the trek to Warung Pojok in Garden Grove.

My cubical neighbor hails from Indo. She confirms that Bali Thai is the best and only in San Diego. If you go, she says the Rendang (beef stew in coconut milk) and Mie Goreng (fried noodle dish) are good there.

I've been to Bali Thai and I loved it. I had the "Yellow Curry w/chicken"...they put a good amount of chicken in it so you don't have to dig around for it. My friend had the "Beef Rendang". I didn't taste it but he seemed to really like it. We also shared the "Pineapple Curry Fried Rice". All was good. I'll definatetly go back.

      2. There is an annual Indonesian food faire in Duarte, CA near L.A. though that doesn't really help you much in San Diego. There used to be an Indonesian restaurant in La Jolla owned by a Dutch guy (he was born in Indonesia) and his Indonesian wife but sadly the place closed probably because the couple were so old. Now you either eat at Bali-Thai, make your own, or go to Garden Grove.
