Trip Report-Waikiki, Kauai, Maui

johnsomebody Apr 10, 2011 10:10 AM

Long time lurker, first time poster. Have used this site for at least 5 years to plan various trips around the country. Decided it's time to contribute some feedback. Spent March in Hawaii and patronized many board favorites on all three islands. Will only mention those places that i agree with Board's consensus and then give two newly found recommendations. As for Board favs that I tried and liked: Waikiki: Ono Hawaiian, Ono Seafood, Musubi-ya-lyasune, Tokkurri-Tei, and Nicos(do the fish-auction followed by breakfast).; Kauai: Hamura's Saimin, Shrimp Station, Brick Oven Pizza, Kalaheo Cafe; Maui: Sensei Kihei (panko crusted ahi roll), Coconut's Fish Cafe, Pita Paradise, Eskimo Candy, Aloha Mixed Plate, Paia Fish Market.
The two places that I have not seen on the Board were discovered because I had bought Groupons before I traveled-both in the Waikiki area. I wasn't expecting much, as I thought maybe places offering Groupons might be "troubled" places desperate for customers. Not so in these cases. First, was the Ilikai Bar and Grill. Had spent $20 for a $40 groupon. Went during a BB game and spent half on beer-half on food. Best Poke I had all month(and I ate a lot of poke) also had the teriaki beef pupu. For a real sleeper-Hanapaa Sushi inside the Times Market(grocery store) about a mile walk from Waikiki. Think I payed $7 for a $15 dollar groupon. This was the most surprising(and economical) meal I had all month. For $15 (my $7) I got the ahi tataki donburi, unagi futomaki, and mini-combo donburi. All were excellent with the latter being the best single dish I had all month ($5 list). Would definitely recommend any budget-minded sushi lovers seek out this this place. It's worth the walk-even without the groupon.

thanks for the feedback johnsomebody. just as visitors love to hear what the locals like, the locals want to hear what the visitors find too, its easy to get into a rut. hope this is just the first of many postings for you either on your travels or at home, wherever that may be.

As K'man says, knowing what turns others on is very important, even for non-locals, like me.

We have dined at The I, but that is a new venue to for me.

      Your comments are greatly appreciated,

The fish auction sounds like fun. How long does it last (in case we can't get there at the 5:30am start)? My son is an avid fisherman and I think he'd get a kick out of it. And then of course Nico's for breakfast.

I'm no expert, bit I'm pretty sure I got there around 8:00. make sure you have shoes on-you need to walk through this sanitizing shoe bath.
