Penang - Char Koay Teow from Joo Hooi Coffeeshop

Lunch today - Penang char koay teow from Joo Hooi Coffeeshop on the corner of Penang Road and Keng Kwee Lane today. Fragrant (wok hei) & perfectly balanced stir-fry. The koay teow (flat rice noodles) was pleasantly chewy. Crunchy beansprouts, fresh bouncy prawns, tiny but tasty cockles provided bursts of salty flavor, thinly-sliced bits of Chinese sausages offered a pleasant contrasting sweetness, and the fresh egg stirred in towards the end of the frying process gave a rich ending.

Rounded off a satisfying lunch with a bowl of chendol from that famous Teochew Chendol stall just outside Joo Hooi - you can place your order via the friendly middle-aged "auntie" waitress: she spoke fluent Cantonese, Mandarin, Hokkien and English! The coffeeshop charges an extra 40 sen to bring the chendol into their premises (RM2,40), but it sure beats having to down the legendary dessert whilst standing outside on the road!

The CKT at Joo Hooi is one of the under-rated places in Penang. The guy is really good! The fact that the best cendol in Malaysia is also sold just outside the coffeeshop is also something hard to ignore :)
