Chowish Dinner Between Boston & Andover?

gansu girl Apr 9, 2011 09:19 PM

We're so metro-Boston focused in our dining destinations - what's in the 'burbs between these two locations? Looking to meet up w/friends next weekend for an adults-only Saturday night dinner . . . suggestions? Very open as to cuisine type, although my husband is not a sushi-eater.

Thanks 'hounds!

gg, i know i have read your posts hundreds of times, but i don't know your fav places.depending on how picky you are, these is hinterlands up here.italian italian italian and mediocre chinese/thai. and did i say italian?

Parson's Table (same original chef/owner of seafood place there- sorry, sometheimer's...)has been consistently well reviewed by Devra F. Winchester Center is 15 min from andover exit on 93 ,and 30 min from so. end boston. Bistro 5 in W.Medford is 8 min. south and inland of winch ctr. It's fine but not notable. If you were coming from brookline and they were coming from andover, Union Sq Somerville ( 7 min. off 93) would be somewhat equidistant for each of you. A CH recently mentioned The Independent as still being good; i haven't been in a while.

Chris VR may have more positive things to say about some others places; i do not. When in doubt, the closer you get to boston, the better the food.

Thanks! These are great suggestions - and I tend to be picky in the sense that if I'm eating out, I avoid mediocre at all costs . . . but other than that, we're really up for almost anything (but for the aforementioned sushi) . . . . we'd thought of The Independent too - may look more into that.

You must report! There are SO many things there that look great to me. I think my and my husband will try it soon - FYI, our Andover friends want to come into Boston, so we might try Via Matta - their idea - never been - you? Sounds swank and it does have proponents on the board, tempted to go for it!

Went once last yr; 4 of us.Nothing special except one dish which i don't remember.
For elegant italian, Erbaluce on the edge of the South End- has major raves from CH and others. That's where i want to go.... soon! We had a very very good meal at Independent tonight; will report tomorrow i think.

Just for readers general info, I do think Bistro 5 is notable. It's gotten tremendoulsy good reviews from both professional reviewers and diners on Yelp, Zagat, here on Chowhound etc and it serves sophisticated Northern Italian cuisine with some fusion elements and very fine ingredients.

I want to like Bistro 5, but it's never as good as I want it to be. I haven't been there in about 3 years though, so maybe they've brought up their game. Let me be clear... it's not bad, but I've never left a meal at Bistro 5 thinking "wow!" whereas the one meal I've had at Parson's Table hit on all cylinders, and has me eager to get back there.

Is Lincoln, MA too far? 51 Lincoln or AKA Bistro (both on my yet to-do list). Il Casale in Belmont (reservations are a must..we tried to walk in early last Sunday and were turned away...at 530pm!).

51 Lincoln is located at 51 Lincoln St. in Newton. While it's very nice, it's not really between Boston and Andover.

We've been to 51 Lincoln and it's very good, but in Newton . . . as is Il Casale. Haven't tried AKA Bistro. But yes, looking for something in between us & Andover . . . .

In dowtown Andover, Yella is becoming a favorite of mine, serving very nice, upscale Lebanese/Mediterranean food. Very nice husband and wife team. Nice setting for a small gathering, small dining room, good wine list. Make a reservation if you go.

Fuloon in Malden. A huge favorite here and of mine.Or Chilli Garden in Medford for Sichuan. The former is close to 95 but only a shortish drive from 93 and the latter is right off 93.

you meant to say the former, Fuloon, is NOT close to 95(128), right? It would be a 40- 45 min drive from the rt 93 andover exit. Chili Garden would be much closer, by 10-15 min.

I did, thank you! We're headed to Via Matta tonight, but The Independent is now top-of-list for the next evening out . . . in fact, maybe later this week when our wee one is out for the night!

Pretty much as you described . . . good, but not mind-blowing. And at that price point, that's not good enough! Much prefer Scampo, or at a lower price point, Posto in Somerville. If your coupon's good, might be worth it, but otherwise, might enjoy something else more!

never heard back from you so didn't buy it. to tell you the truth, that radius experience last yr was soooo disappointing (and we were big fans of the chef, Matt, when he was at tremont 647) and via matta noth. special last march, i just am not interested in michael schlow.I guess i just missed him in his heyday, when he was chefing, excited and inspired.
