Route 66 Style Grilled Onion Burgers around Phoenix?

toojennifer Apr 9, 2011 11:24 AM

I've scouted around here for some time searching for a place that serves my favorite style burgers - those Route 66 grilled onion burgers - thin patty, made from fresh ground beef - never frozen, never preformed - smashed right onto the grill with a spatula, onions grilled in. I've eaten them many times in Oklahoma (J&W Grill in Chickasha - Johnnie's in El Reno), if anyone is familiar with those places or places like them.

I can't always tell from the descriptions which restaurants around Phoenix are closest to this style of burger (In & Out is okay, but doesn't cut it for me). I'll be in town at the end of April and would love to find them if anyone knows.

Thanks, Jennifer

The closest match I can think of is Smashburger, a chain based out of the Denver area. They have a few location around the Phx metro area. Smashburger cook its burgers by smashing them on the flattop, and grilled onions are offered as a topping. You might be able to convince someone there to make a burger for you in the fashion you describe, given that it doesn't sound like a huge leap from what they typically do.

Perhaps someone else knows of a place whose default burger is along the lines of what you've described.

Thanks hohokam - I will definitely check out Smashburger when I'm there.
