Attn Foodies.. Need Help!! Looking for the Spice and Full Flavor food in Nola

Hi All,

This is my 2nd trip to Nola- we're going for Jazz fest (which is suppose to be a foodie heaven in its own)- I'm looking for Spice and Full Flavor. I love seafood.

My last trip- I was not impressed by Commanders Palace, Mothers, or Mr. B's Bistro. All the food was Rich but it didn;t have the full flavor that I was looking for- lacked in the spice department. What I did enjoy was Acme Oyster and BBQ Shrimp at Deanies.

Please if anyone could make some suggestions, I so appreciate your time. I'm looking for places for dinner. At this moment in time, I have reservations at Stella, Upperline, and Coquette for backups. What about K-Pauls and Louisiana Bistro? - both have mixed reviews people either luv or hate.

Cheers and Thank you!!!

Shauna

By "spicy" do you mean hot?

I love spicy hot...but in new orleans I'm looking for FULL flavor. I'm not a real fan of rich and bland ....I'm just not a simple gal.

        Thank you for the clarification.

For what you describe, I would suggest K-Paul's, NOLA, Emeril's and BonTon. Both of the Lagasse restaurants are similar, so no real need to do them both. The others are different enough, that you will not assume that you are doing a repeat.

        Enjoy,

Personally, I do not think that one could go very wrong at either of the mentioned Emeril Lagasse restaurants, though NOLA does not get a lot of love on this board. There is enough similarity, that unless one wanted to do a specific point-counterpoint tasting, either would do.

            Most of all, ENJOY!

I really only thought Louisiana Bistro was so so, to be honest. I loved the idea of the "feed me," but some of the courses on ours just weren't that good. In particular, the gumbo on the night I went was the worse gumbo I've ever had. There had to have been something wrong with it. It was so bad, I almost wondered if the chef knew it sucked, but just served it because he'd made a whole pot and had to use it up.

I know others have liked it there, though. We had an easy time getting reservations, even though we went during JazzFest, too.

Well, "rich" is a great descriptor for NOLA cuisine. While there are spices involved, they are usually a bit more subtle, until one introduces some South Louisiana into the mix.

I think that the above rec. for K-Paul's is a good one. Also, Emeril's and NOLA (the Lagasse restaurant), would fit the bill, at least by my palate. Both Chef Prudhomme and Lagasse incorporate a lot of spices, and most dishes have several layers of spices. Now, there can be some heat involved, the spiciness does not directly translate to heat, as in some Indian, or Thai cuisine - just a wonderful marriage of spices.

        Enjoy,

        Hunt

how about jacque imo's? that menu looks like it has flavor! can't tell with upperline. they have hired a new ( supposed to be great ) chef. don't know if he has his new menu in yet. stella and c oquettes menus look kind-of mild to me. k-pauls should fit your bill. have you been to emeril's? i like the look of his menus.

I am a fan of K-Pauls and think if you're looking for flavor it might be the way to go. I know not everyone here agrees. I prefer the crawfish enchilada to the one Prejean's serves at the fest. My husband does not agree on this point.
