Huevos Rancheros in Calgary?

I truly enjoy this traditional (is it traditional?!) dish for breakfast, but haven't had any luck finding anywhere in Calgary that serves it.

Can anyone please provide me with recommendations?

  1. Based on what I saw with my own two eyes (rather than tasted with my own (one?) mouth) I would recommend one of the Mexican stalls in the Crossroads Market.

The Coup on 17th Ave serves a version but I found them repulsive.

Thanks, I'll check it out this weekend!

    2. Overeasy in the Breakfast District does them. I've never had them, but then again, I've never had anything short of fantastic when eating there either. I'd be willing to bet they do a respectable huevos rancheros.

Sweet, thank you for the suggestion and the link. However, I couldn't find it on their website. Maybe my eyes are just, I'll check again tomorrow!

hmmm.. neither could I. I wonder if it's a relatively new addition and the website just hasn't been updated.

I know for sure that they offer it; last couple of times I was there (within the past month), the servers were all wearing shirts that said, "We have huevos rancheros!"

I just checked and I don't think their site reflects their full menu - I can remember having bison sausage eggs bene and it's not on the website either.

      2. really? i feel like pretty much every breakfast place I go to has 'em. at least that or a breakfast burrito.

The southwest scramble at diner deluxe is basically huevos rancheros.

The Ship and Anchor serves it on the weekends too

the only thing with the diner deluxe meal is that it looked to be served with salsa, not chile (which is what defines huevos rancheros). or is it served with chile, and maybe just not on the menu?

EDIT: same with the ship and anchor, actually... methinks that they may be passing off eggs and salsa as huevos rancheros! terrible!

I've sat in a Mexican kitchen and had a non-English-speaking woman serve me a tortilla with eggs and salsa fresca (aka pico de gallo, aka salsa crudo), and she called it "huevos rancheros". I have never seen it served with salsa roja (or anything similar) in Calgary, though again, I think your best bet would be one of the market stalls at Crossroads. Or, make your own salsa!

I think you're right about Diner Deluxe. We were there last weekend and one of us had the Southwest Scramble. Although the scrambled eggs are served on a corn tortilla, the similarities pretty much stop there. There are sweet peppers (no noticeable chiles) with some salsa mixed in (perhaps). No refried beans, no cheese. Add potatoes. So from what I saw and tasted, Huevos didn't come to mind. Sorry.

When we were at Salt & Pepper (Bowness) last they served Huevos for brunch. Keep in mind that was Easter 2010.
