eVe or Revival, or something else

So where should I go for my birthday dinner. I havent yet been to either eVe or Revival so I am thinking one of them most likely. But open to other ideas in the near East Bay if you think I should consider something else.

  1. welcome, first time poster!

What do you like in your restaurants - what do you think about Wood Tavern, Cesar, A Cote, Oliveto, Boot & Shoe, Commis, Plum, Five, Camino?

I liked that atmosphere at Revival quite a lot, but only had deserts there. Five was money food, but the atmosphere was a little loud and french for a special occasion, in my book.

      Thanks for the response.

I am looking for something unpretentious, delicious, adventurous maybe? atmosphere could range from romantic to wild, doesnt matter to much. I like A Cote a lot. I havent eaten at any of your other choices. Five was on my list but just doesnt sound as interesting as eVe or Revival right now. Commis is probably just out of my price range from this event. B&S sounds like a maybe.

a ha. To Revival for you for your birthday.

Run, don't walk, to Plum. Go there around 10pm, order a few dishes and a flask of wine. It's more delicious but not intended exactly as a "special occasion" restaurant - make it a different trip.

Revival is such a nice "special occasion" room. The food is probably closer to A- than A+, but from what you write, I think you'll enjoy it enough for a trip.

Separately, why are you sticking to the east bay? If it's your birthday, you can cross a bridge, right? There's far more selection of restaurants in that range in SF. Like, Range, Delfina, NOPA, etc.

    2. Rivoli?

      1. What size reservation are you looking for?

I was underwhelmed by both eVe and Revival - at eVe, they're pushing to be innovative, but the flavor combinations didn't really work for me (and I really like foofy avant garde food).

Revival was just ok - I really liked the bone marrow flatbread and the pig plate, but everything else was just competently cooked.

Rivoli, Pican, and Bocanova are probably my picks for a nice night out with good food. I love Camino and Plum but they're both a little on the loud side, and Plum's seating is too uncomfortable for it to qualify as a good bday place for me.

        1. Well thank you all for the tips. I decided to go ahead and make the reservation at eVe. I decided that over Revival because Revival is doing a Japanese themed menu for a relief fund, and I would rather try them for the first time when they are doing their own thing.

@bbulkow Thanks for the tip about plum, I will definitely take your advice. I plan on hitting up Revival very very soon even though we are not going there for the birthday. Further; sticking to East Bay bc its a weeknight and we recently moved here from the city, so I feel like I need to explore here more.

@ daveena - thanks for the tip, hopefully eVe will work out better for us. I will hit up some of your favorites in the near future.
