Last minute trip

Hello -

We will be celebrating my boyfriends 40th birthday with a last minute trip to NYC this weekend. Any advice on somewhere great to take him on friday night would be greatly appreciated. I've looked around the boards already and found some great places, the problem is that I'm looking for somewhere that we can realistically get a last minute reservation for 2 - or at least not have a 2 hour wait for a table.

Cost is not an object
Would prefer to keep it in the Union Square/Village area if possible
Preferably not Italian

I haven't been to NYC in quite a while so any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Fedora only takes reservations day-of so you might have a good shot.

Also places that book only via phone might be worth a try.

Kyo Ya? Degustation? I'd call ASAP.

You can also try for a last minute cancellation at somewhere like Babbo by calling day of.

Danny Meyer restaurants also keep a waitlist. I'd put my name in at at least one of his (EMP, Maialino, Gramercy Tavern, etc.) just in case.

They don't want Italian so Maialino is out. How about Union Square Cafe? Or Craft? Or Veritas?

Bouley and SHO are both not in the Union Square/Village area

Bouley and SHO Shaun Hergatt have prime time openings on Friday night.

If you don't mind dining at early (6 pm), then look into Corton.
