Seeking special occasion dinner rec for Rome

  • 9

We'll be in Rome for a few weeks with family to celebrate my mother's 75th birthday. We're looking for a special occasion-type restaurant (e.g., great food, beautiful, elegant) for 7 of us for dinner. All suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks!

Budget is open - really just looking for the best overall experience.

    2. I should add, after reading all the boards, etc., the 3 on my mind at the moment are Il Convivio Troiano, La Pergola and Il Pagliaccio - but I'd love to get feedback and am open to other ideas.

I don't love the atmosphere at Il Convivi for a celebratory mealo-so stuffy! Il Pagliaccio is a great spot for a special meal, though the tranquility of the place might not mesh with a celebrating party of 7. you might consider All'Oro, which has 1 Michelin star and is run by a family (the chef, his wife and her sister are a team) and the atmosphere is light, neither casual nor formal. the food is great.

I always am concerned, when I am going out with older people that a noisy environment is a bad thing especially with a large table of people. For myself , I HATE restaurants where we cant have a general table conversation and 7 is getting to be a big group, especially if they cant sit at a circular table. So maybe a little tranquility would be good for the OP!

Katie! It's a birthday party for a lady of 75! When we went to All'Oro with another couple approx our age, we all felt like total geezers. Everybody looked about 25. The food was great, but why is informality a plus for such a special occasion?
If it were my family, I would probably go to either Agata e Romeo or Il Convivio, though I wouldn’t sneeze at La Pergola. Of course, I don't mind stuffy, not that I agree that it even is stuffy. Agata is smaller than Convivio, but there are comfortable tables for six and eight, and the atmosphere is tranquil. Also at Convivio they can be comfortable. My only concern about Convivio, which I love and I think the food is great, is that sometimes people just don't like it. Il Pagliaccio is super, but the cuisine may be a little over the top. Also, I think Pagliaccio is one place where a tasting menu is actually better than à la carte, but it may be too much food or too long and drawn out.

Thanks - Yes, I probably should have mentioned that 2 members of our group are somewhat hard of hearing, so calm and tranquil is definitely a priority too.

                Agata e Romeo, definitely.

        2. If you can afford it and you book enough in advance to find a table for 7, I'd definitely recommend La Pergola!
Agata e Romeo suggested by mbfant is also one of my favourites in the expensive range (although less than La Pergola) and atmosphere too should be fine for your needs.
